If you doubt whether this is a legitimate Ukrainian dagger, don't worry it is.

Jim, I believe what you pictured as a variation is the Air Force dagger (blue grip). There is also a Customs dagger with a green grip.

The information on Ukrainian daggers with blue and green grips is not confirmed. There are no pictures of any of these daggers in wear nor documents reflecting that either AF or Customs had daggers issued.
In my opinion it is very unlikely that the customs would have a dagger and the army will not. Ukrainian daggers were definitely a follow up on a soviet tradition, which did not have customs daggers.

Thank you,,did a search and got a few photos..
My wife has 2 nephews right now in Kiev in the military. I've heard it is no longer mandatory but they went in anyway.. I've asked them about this dagger and they said it is still possible to buy one there. So,,this summer I'll go a hunting with them along in hope to get one reasonably priced..
Are these being faked??

I have not seen anything so far that I believe is a reproduction.
However, be careful on the blade markings. Issued daggers will have all the markings mine have. What i have seen are some direct from the factory with no markings. These, I assume, were stolen by factory workers, rejected by QC, etc.
Just my thoughts
I would also point out that I have owned the two examples I show for more than 10 years.

Great daggers Jim! I believe the blue one is a rare variation, I never seen such grip. It cannot be for airforce or any other branch for the simple reason that the grip has anchor - the emblem for the navy.

It could not be a variation of the navy dagger simply because there is one and only one navy with black handle. It could be a prototype, experimental, AF, etc., but not a variation of a navy. Buy the way the scabbards of both daggers have a wind rose on the fittings, and the wind rose is usually a navy symbol.

as we are having such a nice discussion about Ukrainian daggers, here is a scan of a belt and hangers for Ukrainian navy dagger.
It is literally identical to the soviet one. The only difference is a tiny trident instead of a star on the buckle.

Just heard from a major in the Ukrainian Navy that they sell souvenir-variants in shops around Ukraine. He did not go into great detail, just said that they look like the original.
Cheers,

While going through my records for year end, I found the original Fax where I communicated with the Dealer in Poland where I purchased several of the daggers and specifically the two I pictured here. The fax is dated in the late 90's. It stated what we then believed as to the light colored grip being Air Force. Please keep in mind there were language issues with me speaking only some polish and the dealer speaking only some English. He could very well have ben telling me it was for Naval pilots.
Another forum member has inquired on the Ukrainian web sites and they know very little about these either.
I was fortunate to get these prior to the unmarked ones coming out. I am also glad to hear there are differences between the originals and the copies.
