Hello my friends, Here is a last stop that I went, when I was in Germany, last March. It has always been my dream to visit this Laboe as Ive always been interested about the Uboats, especially the ones that went to South East Asia. And it sparked me to do my research & website http://monsun-uboats.spaces.live.com/Picture of the beautiful beach in Laboe. The sun was up & snow just ended but still it was freezing cold and there werent that many people at all. A nice long walk up the road. The Uboat on my left & on my right the Laboe Ehrenmal.

U995 , ground view. Specifications of the Uboat Entrance view. Its closed but I sneaked in !! Picture inside it. The engine room. Someone was doing some cleaning inside it which explains the plastic tubing. Once I was back outside, I took this cool shot. Another shot. A final aerial shot when I was up the Ehrenmal.

I went up to the highest point to get an aerial view. It was really cold but to be there just by myself & soak up the atmosphere is just amazing.

I took the bus to Laboe as I love to travel in a slow paced way & enjoy the scenery & people whom I meet in the bus ... so for anyone here is interested , here is a small guide on how I reach there. ---------------------------------------------------- The nearest international airport is Hamburg. Having arrived at Hamburg, your first destination is Kiel, about 90 kilometers away. Taking the Bus to Kiel
Take the airport bus Kielus to Kiel-Hauptbahnhof (Eurorail train station). The journey takes 90 minutes, departs hourly and will set you back 29 Euros for a round trip. The bus timetable - http://www.kielius.de/ Changing Bus to Laboe At Kiel-Hauptbahnhof. Get down and switch bus to Laboe. The bus stop is just outside the train station. Take Motorbus Line 100 to Laboe. Departing every 30 minutes, get down at the last stop, which is "Laboe Hafen". It takes 45 minutes and costs 2 Euros plus one way. U-995 is about 1 kilometer from the bus stop. If youre adventurous, you can just walk and enjoy the sights. Just follow the beach line and walk towards the right (when facing the sea) and you cant miss it. ----------------------------------------------------

Cheers for sharing, I was lucky enough to visit U-995 in '2006 what a great sight, I caught the ferry from Kiel harbour to Laboe, I could just imagine all the u-boats in the harbour.

As an interesting side note, when a veteran of a KM ship or U-boat is the last living member of his crew , he will be invited to 'come aboard' a group of another unit.
In the ceremony, the veteran approaches the senior ranking officer of the group and asks permission to 'come aboard'..he is accepted in and remains a part of the family.
