Hi,Is there anything I should look for in the way insignia is stitched to caps,I see reference to machine stitching, zig zag type stitching and of course hand stitched. Was there any uniform way the insignia was attached at source of manufacture.Cheers,Grip.

Hand stitching was by far the most common and is what I expect to see most of the time. Whenever I see machine stitching on cap insignia, I consider it suspect. I have seen zig-zag machine-stitched insignia that appeared to be period done, but these are rare. Straight machine stitching was used exclusively on fezzes. It was also used on camo cap insignia, but good luck finding an original camo cap with insignia!

bwanek1 Thanks for that.It is such a minefield out there regards insignia,I just wish that I could get my hands on a genuine cap with genuine insignia so that I can then begin to recognise the real thing from the fakes! It's the availability in the UK that is the problem. As you all know I was well ripped off at a recent show in UK and I'm so reluctant to buy again just to be told that what I have is more crap!If anyone is parting with good items will they let me know!Grip.

Grip,It really depends on the type of cap...in regards to stitching. Some caps are more likely to be found with hand stitching as Bwk1 stated...however other caps would be more likely to be found with machine stitching. It all depends on the type of cap and then there can be variations in the stitching methods in accordance to the manufacturer.

Well I have posted another cap,an NSKK Officers on the other than SS uniform forum,if this one is wrong I'm off cloth and sticking to daggers. It is obvious that hands on inspection is the only way to learn, the trouble is where I live there are no big dealers or collectors to visit to see and feel these items. Thanks for the help and keep it coming.Grip.
