While I am still waiting for my copy of "SS Helmets" by Beaver/Hicks to arrive, something else arrived yesterday. It is a new DVD produced here in Canada called "Canada's War in Colour".

On two DVDs it depicts WW2 from the Canadian perspective...from the early pre-war years to the end of hostilities in 1945, all in great period colour film footage. One very cool film scene is depicted at one of the two Honour Temples in Munich. It shows a Canadian tourist's private film taken at the changing of the guard at one of the temples in the summer of 1939...just prior to the outbreak of war. As with most good things it is all too brief, but I captured some stills on the computer. Here they are...

another...it's interesting to see that the SS guards goose-step for about three strides and then break into a normal march.

Hi Bernie,

I missed the showing on TV but I believe it was a CBC production...shown around Rememberance Day last year. I got this set from a shop in Toronto.

Robert,

Yes indeed...a few different styles of transitional helmets are discernable in that image. I can see droop-bills, RZMs and an Austrian M16.

Paul,

The colour is outstanding. I just wish they were clearer images...and closer.

Cheers,

Here are a couple more stock shots of the Day of German Art. This one of AH arriving has been seen before but it shows some good views of blackies in wear.

Cool........

I love seeing colour images of this period, somehow they never seem as "real" as the black & white images if you know what I mean.

Thanks for showing them Cool

Cheers
Don

Very nice, will have to get myself a copy.

I love the old footage whether it be B&W or colour.

If you have not seen this, I highly recommend that you do at some stage. This is a very fascinating documentary indeed and the BBC DO NOT churn out any old rubbish.

Looks into the infrastructure and how it was all based on hate for each other, seeking personal praise from their leader.

Thanks for showing.

Davey

This proves the sun actually did shine during WWII. The B&W are always soooo gloomy. Nice Thread Darryl. Thanks!

I love how thorough Darryl has been with vantage points and everything...It's as if it were the Dealy Plaza and a "second gunman" investigation. Is this a rediscovered WWII Zapruder Film? Wink

Darryl you are right that the first two pictures where taken in Munich, no doubts about it. And I knew it before I came to picture #3.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the modern pic of the Fuhrerbau. The Honour Temple where the film was taken would have stood immediately to the right of the camera. I understand that area is now all just rubble with overgrown trees and bushes.

BTW, nice website. I wish you great success with it. You are one of the "good guys" in this hobby.

Cheers,

Hi Robert,

Yes, hope to see you at the MAX in Indy.

Here is yet another view of this Honour Temple in Munich. This one is taken from one of the second story Fuhrerbau windows overlooking the monument. I have placed another red arrow near the spot where the film was taken back in 1939. You can also see the second temple on the other side of the street.

Cheers,

Indeed it is. Here's how it looked in '04 with the Fhrerbau behind.

I'll be there this time next week for the weekend so will look to see if there has been any changes. There was talk of the authorities bulldozing them..... Shame if they do.

Cheers
Don

Hi Don,

Thanks for the picture. I was hoping you would chime in here as I knew you took some pics at this location on a previous trip. If you are able, please try and take a pic from the same vantage point as the original film stills at the top of this thread. Perhaps I can put together another "ghosts from the past" image like we did at the Feldherrnhalle. Wink

Well this is the same angle now. High bushes obscuring the path I'm afraid.
