Hello everyone.
I have been questioning this SA for a long time. It has a nice inscription ,which is period, this guy was a mounted standard bearer. I have had it apart and the grip is definately black all the way through. It has nickle silver parts and the anodised scabbard has seen better days.
I am sure the yellowing to the fittings is not brass coming through, I have given the cross guards a light clean with Autosolv and some of the yellow has come off. It looks to me as though this has had a gilt finish at some time. Though it has seen better days.
This is without a doubt the darkest grip I have seen on an SA? Unless you can tell me otherwise.
PS MM is A Wingen Jr

You've got your lower crossguard on backwards. Interesting dagger...

HAHA thanks Skyline. Thats what I get for taking things to pieces, which I try to avoid.
It is now back the way it should be.....
Also saw this as I put it back together. letters are GH......more to ponder!!

Anton Wingen was a fairly large TR manufacturer. My guess is the letters GH are the initials of the person that fashioned the grip. Unless Wingen used parts supplied by Gottlieb Hammesfahr...

GH markings on this grip are indicative that it was made by Wilhelm Kober & Co. Mark

Looks as a parts dagger . The crossguards - especiality the lower - are definitively from a "Suhler" maker as Kober , Sauer und Sohn or Haenel .

OKay.
I have looked inside the cross guards. Both have a symbol similar to the SA button . The lower guard also has the letters K and A S to the other side, the upper guard has the symbol and the letter K only.
Hope this helps a little more.

Spock, Personally I would want to hold and inspect this first hand to make a judgment, IMHO the engraving looks to be correct BUT I would want to see it first hand and look at itr close to be sure. I like the looks but I want that 6th sense feel to determine if it's right.

I can bring it to the Max show if you are attending. Let me know, I am staying at the La Quinta.

The "Yellow Stuff" on there looks like old lacquer to me. 3FL

The Red Flag on this engraving I see is that there is a fairly deep scratch that goes through the "E" in Verdientste. It sure looks like the engraving goes OVER that scratch! Not good. 3FL

By the way, don't take that comment as a nix on the dagger, Just an offhand comment! There are a million reasons why it might look like that!

3FL.
No probs, in hand it looks perfect, I blame the scanner for the shoddy image, when I manage to capture my new 6 Megapixel camera from my "MYSPACE" teenage daughter I will attempt an NORMAL lighting shot so you can all see the quality of the engraving. To be honest I didnt even know those scratches were there until the scanner did it`s bit.
