Hi; Just got this ratty army. Should be real just on the condition issues (20% corrosion and four chips out of orange solid plastic grip and swaz broken off) but it has the makers mark K.Negele/Tu(umlout)binge(n or r?). I've not seen one of these before. Is it a maker or retailer? Do guys collect these by maker? Doug

1st- Welcome to the forum. 2nd- If you could post a few pics. I think that would help a lot. 3rd- That is not a maker mark that I am aware of, it may be a distributor mark... but I am not very familiar with the differing distributors. Someone else will happen across this post and probably be able to answer that question. It may also be some type of personalization (owners name and location?) again, pics would help. 4th- YES, a lot of people collect by maker marks. Good luck, Johnny V.

Der Kerl, also welcome to the forum. The location is Tbingen (a town near Stuttgart) and it sounds like a distributor mark.

Gosh, that does look ratty. I concur with johnny and wotan. It's a equipment supplier / retailer or distributors mark. Never seen it before though.

Zeet Doug. Ja, well, the only hanging out you would be doing in Hillbrow these days would be out of the windows of some gangsters flat. Do you remember the Cafe de Paris on Kotze Street where we used to pick up a late night coffee? Well it's now a terrific place to pick up an incurable disease Jo'burg now is not the Jo'burg of fond memory boet. The whole thing has decentralised out of the city and we've left the town to the skollies and squatters. Jo'ies is still a great place to live and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else, but we've moved the jol out to the suburbs.

Hi; After Rhodesia I went down south for a few years. Hillbrow was cool for a bit when I was in town. Traveled quite a lot. Liked the Irish Club. A den of Fenian activity. Half of the Regulars were proud of their Royal Warrents. Singing, drinking, crying, and so forth. German Beer Keller the JDL guys cleared out one April 20th. 1000 SAP Counstables just stood around and let these guys beat on each other. Learned all about the Klompy Pompy (Sp) and switch hitter school teachers. Pre-AIDS. Really Wierd! But, kind of fun after Salsbury. Level with the Grevel. Doug

You would not recognise the South Africa of today Doug. It is altogether a better, more prosperous place with a great deal more opportunity than in the 80's.
Come and visit some time.

HI; Still have a friend or two there. One lives right behind a Police camp in Durbs. Living in the shadow of it makes him a bit safe. Maybe even a child or two as well. I would be afraid I might be attracted to one now.
I don't jet around like I used to anymore. Imported hundreds of Garands to there from Pakistan. Had no idea that they would all be "Cs" & "Ds". Been looking for a mint OVS Mauser for years for a friend. No luck.
Had friends over here for the hunting in REAL mountains. Flew back in and walked out in the snow. Saw some sheep three Ks away. Had a good time. Better than being distracted by the Cubans and missing the lion trying to get into my land Rover with no doors. Down a Lion Lager. Doug

Hi!
My name ist Ringo and i live in Tbingen. K. Ngele is a shop where since 1912 sells uniforms and other things ( also Daggers ) in Tbingen, but they dont build this daggers. They only buy and sell them. In the time of the second world war K. Ngele sell a lot of officer tunics for the heer and for the fire brigade in the district of Baden - Wrttemberg. Now in this time K. Ngele built a lot of histroy uniforms for marchingbands and other groups of musik an tradition.
Look at google for Naegle AND Tuebingen.
so long
Ringo

Captain, Excellent information, thank you! A retailer mark identified. Maybe someday the forum will have a picture gallery of retailers and distributors marks. Charlie

Fellows,
Sorry for jumping into this one so late. I have a fire bayonet also marked by K. Negele, Tbingen. The mark is not common at all, I've only seen it on two Feuerwehr faschinenmessers and now this Heer dagger. I would say despite the condition some people would spend for this mark. This picture is from Orpo's collection, I haven't had the time to snap any of mine.
Captian, Do you have any literature on this company, considering they're still in business? I'm interested in the distributors of blanke waffen from WWII and would appreciate any help you can give me. Many thanks.

As google shows the firms name is right NEGELE (as on the army dagger and on the bayonet) and not NGELE as mentioned. Small but -imo- an important fact concerning collecting and ascertain a collectible. Nevertheless, thank you very much captain/Ringo for this valuable and important hint on this retailer.

Hi; Took it to the Pomona Military Show last weekend. Then got an Email from a guy on this form who says he has an Alcosa (Sp?) Army with this on the other side. Whitman was there passing out Max Show flyers (tax deduction) sold him a few small items. Then showed him the dagger and he said that he had never seen one before. So, I gave it to him to photograph. He is doing an addendum to his book. Gave him a couple of navies for his Navy book and he misspelled my name bad. We talked about it. Doug

Hi; Just got off the phone with Tom Wittmann. He kindly photographed this one for his addendum. He told me that the fittings are Horster. He seems to thinks I can squeeze $700-800 out of it. That would make me happy.
Bob Rodgers out here tells me that he has one that has this distributer mark on it and the Alcoso maker mark on the other side. I must of had several hundred army daggers over the last fourty years and have never seen one before. Now I guess we got two. Maybe Bob would like to post pictures of his one here as well. The more the merrier. Doug

Since Doug hasn't posted any updates on this dagger.
I thought i should add a few things to this thread.
I went to Doug's house last week to check this dagger out. While i know it's not a "parts" dagger, there are some major issues with it.
1. Pommel has major lifting and is deeply pitted 2. Grip has a few good size chunks out of it and has 1 or 2 cracks. Which will not allow a tight fit against the x-gaurd 3. Crossgaurd has been de-nazified and has 5 % of any plating left. The person who damaged it split the inner slot also. It also has major pitting 4. The scabbard isn't too bad, but does have 2 areas with pitting. Which might clean up. 5. The blade is just dirty and will clean up nice. This is the only part worth any money in my book. Being that it is a very rare maker i would say 300-400 for the blade only. But you would have a parts dagger later to sell !
Doug, Im not jumping on you, but i wanted everyone to understand the real condition of this dagger as I see it. Sorry but these are the facts of this dagger.

Hi; Well, I stuck it on Eban a couple of weeks ago with a $800 start. Got some interesting Emails but no sale yet and the auction is over. Needed some better pictures and camera broke. Think I'll take it apart and scan the blade. I'll see what happens. Maybe I'll look for a fire dress bayonet with the same distributor and have a complete collection of that distributor. Hummmmmmmmmmmmmm?
I wonder if Bob will post pictures of his here? Maybe he thinks well enough of Tom Wittmann to send him his for a picture of his forthcomming book? Doug
