Hi I was about to buy a dagger and in the last minute I got to know that it was made of Zinc.
I am a novice in the collecting comunity so I would love some input on the subject. I have tried to search but didnt find any thread on this topic.
I have no doubt on the originality but I didn't know that there where any 1:st model made of zinc part. (I thought they where made of nicelsilver and Aluminium)
Thanks /Bjorn

Plated zinc hilts were used for a short while between the nickel and aluminum variants. Mostly the plating did not hold up too well. But as far as being legit they certainly are!

@lakeside:

Who made the order:

nickel-zinc-aluminium

for 1st modell luft`s?

There are some good reasons that it could also be:

nickel-aluminium-zink

or:

nickel-zink/aluminium

Thank you for the quick anwer.
Is a Siegfried Waffen with copper inlays its hard to tell by pictures but is there any chance of confusing zinc parts with steel part?

I'll ask the seller if I am allowed to post his pictures here.
Thank you /Bjorn

There are no Steel Parts at the dagger! (except the blade.

There are 4 material-versions:

-Nickel-Silver
-Zinc
-Aluminium anodised
-Aluminium silvered (scarce)

I have one that is clearly silver plated Zinc. They are rare, and because the zinc "flakes", they are not that pretty so the price is usually lower.

I always thought they were late production.

Medes: It was just me hoping it to be something other then Zinc :-)

This is the reason why I mentioned steel:

The attached picture is of the Zink version that I intended to buy.

It looks to be nickle silver to me. What happened to the scabbard mouth?

Here are some pictures of my Zinc 1st Luft and its a Siegfried Waffen as well. This is not in the best shape and almost all the plating is gone. Mark

I own one as well. Same configuration as Berra 77 and the one Gottlieb sold. Plated white metal-aluminum chain-triple wire wrap on the grip-thick crossguard butt section-inserted copper disc on the pommel I can not remember seeing a later aluminum by Pack or for that matter an all solid nickel silver early model. They did have several different marks they used on the 1st model Luftwaffe.

What I see I would say it`s the scarce silver-plated Aluminium Type.
The whole maker I know for this is EP&S.

Medes, zinc examples may well have been produced up to the end by some manufacturers. IMHO the aluminum version was the last.
Bjorn, the example you show seems to have the separate roundels inserted to create the golden swas. Not exactly sure what the material is. It should be easy to figure out if it's steel with a magnet. Again something is not right with the throat.
WW2-collector, indeed Pack did make an all nickel version.
As far as Craig's example having steel hilt fittings, I've never seen or heard of this myself but we do know that Pack did some odd things...

@ lakeside:
I never heard of an dagger with iron hilt fitings! Who has such a dagger Craig Gottlieb?

There are more facts for beeing the Zink-dagger the last..- 1st that Aluminium is more expensive to produce und more needed for the war-machinery.

@Ritterkreuz:
No I would say the dagger from berra77 is silver plated aluminium. All looks typical for this ,only from EP&S known model.

I brought up the point that there was a steel hilt example for sale on a site of one of this sites advertisers,Gottliebs, I wanted to possibly purchase it, but since NO ONE BOTHERED TO REPLY the thread just drifted away.I am not known as one of the good ole boys so I wasnt responded to I wrote it off as fake garbage.http://daggers.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/886093573/m/1210025665

Thank you guys for taking the time to explain to a "neewbie" like me.

@Laksidetrader: The throat is missing the top part unfortunateky I dont know why or how.

@tiep: Well you seems to have dont the right thing in the end nobody seems to keen on that setup.

@medes: Yes Craig had one that is sold, you have the link in post eight or
http://www.craiggottlieb.com/data/inspect.asp?Item=2750...+First+Model+by+Pack

Ritterkreutz: It looks like yours have the typical dull-gray zinc apperence that I have seen on many badges made of zinc.

Some more photos of the dagger.
