Is it a general rule of thumb that if the pin an a lapel badge is not twisted then it is a repro,I have a silver riders lapel badge that is correctly marked but is plain,I have a bronze one that is twisted, same maker though.
Thanks,Ivan.

Grip,
Good question, I have always gone byt the rule that if the pin is not twisted or as in some cases' has lines looking like a twist it was no good. Hope this helps.

Ivan, can you post some images? Obverse and reverse?
Most stick pins have a twist, left or right twist is acceptable! Some few do not show a twist!
Replica stickpins are being produced with twists also!

I have a good few of these badges, this one appears to be minty, perhaps too minty,I have never seen these faked as yet though, the market surely does not reqire these to be reproduced,I seem to be the only one to post them!
Regards,Ivan.

Ivan, I do not really know what to think of the riders badges in general! Your examples look fine! I wonder what percentage of the silver class are silver marked? I know that examples of the badge with and without the far elbow showing are accepted as variations.
I have no pictorial proof but at one time I had in my posession a mint bronze set with the R, badge and stick pin, ST&L, both well marked but the badge had what most consider a post war hinge and pin set up. No second elbow showing.
I traded it off as post war.

Wish we could get some good discussions going on these badges.
Along with an image gallery review of known orignials vs known post war issue.

It is a good rule of thumb that a needle without twist is a repro, however as with all rules, there are exceptions.

I do know of a couple of pins (I'm not talking horse riders here, they aren't my area) that I would be comfortable with that have no twist. I think you have to take every case on it's merit.

My own rule of thumb these days is everything is fake until I'm personally happy that it isn't.....

Cheers
Don

Joe and Don,
Thanks for the help,I have always thought that the twist was a sign of period manufacture,It was the fact that this was a riders set and did not think that the market was out there to fake the pin and make a killing. The makers mark on the badge is as the others I have, but these are mint, unisued in their box and I was suspicious of the pin.
I think it is refreshing to see some more obscure badges on here, not necessarily expensive ones, but different.
Regards,Ivan.
