Last night, I picked up this luft sword from the son of the vet. The guy's dad had been a decorated combat medic in the 90th Division. He also brought home an Army Officer sword, but the vet's other son is keeping it.
I was pleased to see that the son resisted the impulse to clean the sword in any way. It has a nice, dark patina on the nickel/silver fittings. I looked for examples on the web and noticed that every Luft sword I saw has been polished or cleaned, or the later aluminum types. Am I the only one who enjoys a 60+ year patina?
I am not a collector of swords or daggers and I am curious to hear comments and details about this piece, including approximate value. Thanks!
---Chris

No unit marks, but the soldier's name is etched on the scabbard.

Thanks Mustang! I'm glad other people appreciate an as-found sword that hasn't been monkeyed with.

I just received an email from a gentleman that is intersted in purchasing this sword from me, yet is concerned that the pommel is "past the toning stage" and the "the metal is beginning to break down and it needs conservation work".
Is there any merit to this or am I just being carefully set up for a low ball offer?
By the way, I do not intend on keeping this sword and I am accepting offers. Thanks.

Either this person making the offer is lacking knowledge in silver oxidation or he is low balling you. What is important is that there is 100% silvering remaining around ALL (4) of the swastika legs. That black patina is beautiful.
All the best..

MRW, I agree with you completely. I was just amused by his email, so I thought I'd share. Thanks.

A very nice Luft sword, for sure. To clean away 70 years of that kind of patina would border on criminality, or madness.
