I recently ran across these interesting documents in the personnel file of SS-Standartenfhrer Rudolf Pannier. In this document from April 1944 Pannier is making an application to the SS Personnel Chancellery that he be awarded the Totenkopfring based on a ruling of Heinrich Himmler and the SS Personnel Main Office from August 28, 1942. Does anyone know more about this policy of Himmlers from August 1942?

A few interesting details about Rudolf Pannier is that he was not a Party member and his high SS number of 455 891 results from his transfer from the Police to the SS in April 1942. Pannier had been awarded the Ritterkreuz in May 1942 as a battalion commander in the SS-Polizei Division.

The ring appears to have been awarded, possibly in November 1944, although not reflected on the front of Pannier's Fhrerstammkarte. It is not often that these documents are found in the personnel files (Personalakte) of SS officers.

Hi John,

Great documents, thanks for posting them. I'm not familiar with the August, 1942 policy, but doesn't it sound strange that a guy would be able to request the totenkopfring for himself? Granted he was no lightweight, already being a Ritterkreuztrger, but still strange. I think it would diminish some of the cache based on the fact the ring was "awarded". I suppose it confirms the status the ring must have bestowed on it's recipients and how they surely coveted it.

Thanks Gaspare. Now it is more understandable why it is sometimes so difficult to match a ring to a known SS officer since there are plenty of other possibilities.
