Hi guys, I just bought a M 40 black original period repaint helmet, from the grand son (about 40) of a vet. He was told that the helmet was taken off a young German solder about 16 he thought. He (grandson) had not a clue about this helmet. I want to find a site to check out this puppy before I post any pictures and have it torn apart by some of the NEW EXPERTS THAT HAVE JUST STARTED COLLECTING AND SEEM TO WANT TO SHOW ALL THEY KNOW?? The helmet is quite a find if correct a double decal Totenkopf (skull), good condition and it sure looks good to me. What I need is a site where I can compare my helmet with others. After I make up my own mind I will post picture and then have it torn apart, even if it is correct. Thanks all walterlo

Walterlo...
I believe I have seen a photo(period Photo)of a man wearing a Helmet with a Totenkoph decal on it but I can not for the life of me find it.
I Looked through several different books including books by Hicks,Kit Wilson, and Goodapple and Weinand, but again no luck.Like always, if I was not looking,it would be in front of me now. One last thing I seem to remember it not having two decals, but just the Totenkoph on the front of the helmet.
Would like to see your helmet when your ready to show it.

Sepp, Is it possible you are thinking of a Freikorp helmet? This would most likely be a M16 or M18 helmet with a large totenkopf on the front.
Waterlo, I can't say that I've ever heard of a helmet with a totenkopf decal. Two questions - are the decals located on the sides of the helmet? - is the decal a black background with a silver jawless skull? I do recall that sometime in the late 60's/early 70's a company named Delta International was selling this type of decal. I'm sorry to say that it was purely a fantasy item. Hope I'm wrong.

An original helmet with that decal & or painted geometry would be very rare and desirable to a collector. Totenkopfs on helmets did exist; however, for only a short period of time. Most pictures existing show the totenkopfs om M-18 & M-16 helmets that were painted the standard field gray. What model helmet is your totenkopf on? You already stated that your helmet is black.

Since we have no photos to examine I would go back to the beginning description: a black M40 with DD Totenkopf decals. Just based on that and the story behind it (which one must always take with a huge grain of salt) I would guess that the decals are a post war "improvement" added to make it look more evil. Of course this is just a guess - I, for one, want to see some photos as otherwise we are dealing with sheer speculation. Cheers, Mike

First time I saw this picture, it was on the cover of a Signal magazine and was accompanied by the close combat knife that can be seen on the belt of the middle soldier . . . whether it was exactly the same knife or not is hard to say but it certainly was an impressive blade and one I'd love to know the where about's of today! ~ Ian

The photo posted is of Finnish soldiers that have the white painted skull & bones insig. of the 4th Kevyt Osasto (Light Detachment) in 1939-40.
If your M40 have the decals I will post here now (or similar), then it is a fake. Sorry.

Thanks Ian, Anders, Sepp and Denny, for the photo 411 and comments on this skull version decal.
Still seems like it's possible though, that an official totenkopf style helmet decal exist?
Cheers, Pauli

Only on Danzig helmets, skull on one side and a Danzig sheild on the other.
