I do not recall seeing a Zimmerman cross marked on the center reverse. The mark is normally located on the underside of the pin. Either 20, L/52 or both L/52 and 20. Unless it is a screwback L/52 marked near the edge of the arm.
The inner beading near the swastika does not resemble a Zimmerman piece in my opinion.

Zimmerman's measure 44.5mm height and width with 26.5mm across arm ends and weigh 17.8 gr. according to The Iron Cross of 1939 by: Gordon Williamson.

Others thoughts?

Link to my examples of 20 and L/52.

have you ever seen a vaulted L52? or one marked 900 on the lower arm. measurments i made were off a wooden school ruler, not too exact, give or take a mm or a half. i wil ltry and get better pics with more light on here. does anyone else have any views on this? regards,,mike

Mike, Does it appear to be factory vaulted or done by the wearer? The LDO put a halt to vaulted crosses but individuals had their own will.

I do not recollect seeing a 1939 EKI with a silver content mark except for early awards, (pre LDO) made from leftover 1914 EKI stock.

I am a long way from having seen everything!
Others thoughts? Please.

joe, the cross is factory vaulted, ive seen vaulted ones made by the original owner or subsequent owners, and this one is most certainly factory done. the pics arent too clear, but it is coal black with patina. the measurments are indeed 44.5mm across. i feel this was a very early piece, purchased by a well heeled officer. regards,,mike

The L/52 mark on this cross is nothing like that found on an original.

Mike,
Could you give us a close up of the date area? Perhaps a straight on shot of the obverse?

For now I am merely suspicious, I am not fond of condemning an item out of hand unless I am on solid ground and have back up resource material. I have seen original items that have been enhanced some where in their past to obtain a higher price. The positioning of the LDO number on a non Zimmerman frame is what is causing the most concern.

Let's put it like this...I would be gob-smacked if it gets the thumbs up as original.

Here's the back of a Zimmermann... anything look similar?
