Looks like a nice original Infantry Officers sidecap. Value around $450

Probably sweat and hair grease, the best combination! Very nice cap Bob, I've probably undervalued it to be honest.

Great cap, Bob.
Is the piping discoloured white, or another colour?

White was the most commonly seen piping. It is for Infantry / Bicycle Units / Recruiters. The second two had other pipings at various stages through the war.
Can't say which Infantry unit. This piping was discontinued from these caps after July 1942, so the wearer was likely to have been commissioned prior to this.
These caps, with piping, were used right up to the end of the war.
David!
