The eagle insert looks as though someone tried to de-nazify it and gave up. The lower crossguard to grip fit is the result of the pommel nut not being fully tightened. The condition of the blade is not all that great. Who is the maker?

The inscription on the blade says: Tiegelwerk Riemberg, Bez. Breslau.

The grip is not black, it's dark brown.

Strike... it will come down to price and what you're comfortable with paying for a dagger in this condition, with the points made by Skyline.

Tiegelwerk is a rarely seen maker. In my opinion, that would make this dagger more collectible in this condition than say, a Pack or an F. Dick.

Something about the motto looks off to me. The etching looks very shallow and the U in "Ulles" doesn't match any that I own. Doesn't mean it's not a good one though, as my experience is limited.

Looks like another parts dagger, due to the poor fitting of the crossguards and grip. The blade is VERY odd, I have owned dozens of SA dagger and never seen such a poorly etched blade. BUYER BEWARE! I hope you can get it cheap!

That is actually an "A" for "Alles"
But I agree that the blade looks somewhat 'off' and it is probably a parts piece.

My advice for your first SA:

Find the best conditioned one you can for the price you're willing to pay. If it happens to be a less common maker, great, but you cant go wrong with an Eickhorn, Pack, etc. You'll never regret the purchase, and as you study one that is in good condition that you know is "right", you'll feel more comfortable purchasing others. That's when you can start looking for different makers and variations.

Just my opinion.
Good luck!

Much better, nice even patina to the fittings. Anodized scabbard looks much better than average. Some greying to the blade, but if no sharpening, it isn't bad. Crossguard to upper scabbard fitting looks good too. Ball isn't smashed. Hey, if you like it, it's a good solid example.
