This piece just landed.
Nice early brass based Voos with a very interesting cross guard for the collector who appreciates the army dagger. When I saw the sellers photographs I thought it might be a Pack variant or possibly Klaas. The slim profile of the body of the cross guard as well as the slight outward flare of the reverse actually makes it more similar to the early Alcoso, but there the similarity ends. Quite apart from the eagle being completely different the Alcoso has straight shoulders & this one is curved & also the wreath is considerably smaller in diameter. I am having difficulty attributing this one however it is a nicely enhanced piece with a very noble head! The scabbard is an Alcoso product. The plated blade is in very nice condition though as with most plated blades there are now witness marks where the runners have been sitting for so long.
I hope that you enjoy studying this one I invite opinion on cross guard. If you have one of a similar type please compare.

I really love those early Army brass based daggers. Beautiful handcrafted crossguard and pommel, mint blade, it just doesn't get any better. Congrats !

V, A great dagger and I am glad to see you talked yourself out of it again! . My guess would be a modified Klaas 1st, its certainly unique and a pattern adopted and enhanced by Voos as shown here on another thread and with the same crossguard EMIL VOOS. Maybe Voos dabbled in the early days with a design of their own but I remember reading a Wittmann description of the same crossguard and it was described as a modified Klaas variant. A wonderful addition to your early collection of outstanding army daggers, I almost wish choosing this one over the Weyersburg! Jon

Thanks Jon! I am getting really good at talking myself out of buying daggers & exercising some self control. I have had my curiosity aroused and also posed the same question. It may be possible that this is a unique cross guard? It has certain similarity to the early Klaas in places but the wreath is quite different. If compared to both of the klaas depicted in Wittmann`s book -which are not identical - it does not share their common traits. Interesting to be sure!

There's something about an early army that gets my blood pumping just that little bit faster, these hand enhanced crossguards are a treat for the eyes, a beautiful dagger with what is quite a rare mark on a plain bladed type.
Thanks for posting this beauty

Thank you Gary, My good friend tells me that this might be considered an 8 for rarity. I have but seen two others so for sure it is uncommon. The one that Degens kindly posted the link to has a mark that is contained in a single oval; this one a double. It`s an addiction! for which the only cure is.....there is no cure!
