As many of you know I am always trying to encourage new collectors as they begin to enter this hobby. Accordingly, I have on several occasions given away some either dubious or outright faked items to them so as to teach them what to look out for. As it happens I have a piece or two that I am willing to part with at no charge other than postage to young collectors. If any of you know of any young folks who are trying to get a foothold in the hobby, please have them contact me and I will be happy to provide them with an item upon which they may gain some experience. We have to look to the future, so getting young folks on board is the way to go.

Cheers,
-Mike

Mike,

A man after my own heart! I just gave several reference books and about 50 photographs to a new collector. Stunned him as what someone was willing to give him to help get him off on the right foot.

Regards,
Craig

Yes indeed...Mike is unique. Most people these days are "takers". Mike is a "giver". Nice to see.

Well I was updating my will yesterday....a little 'memento mori" and I recalled the words my old pastor said - "I've never seen a hearse going to a cemetary with a U-Haul attached". So since I won't be taking these things and there is no interest on the part of my nephews, now is the time to think about their disposition. I plan to add one or two nice items in future, but there are many things that I have collected that would be nice in a new collector's hands but are really not that rare, and really the entry costs to this hobby are getting prohibitive. Just trying to insure that the hobby has a future fellows. This is a more or less standing offer so should you have an aspiring collector in mind let me know.

The best thing I did was join this forum!! It has helped me a lot. Thanks to mike and others, who are not to proud to offer excellent advice.

I said before when Mike helped the lad out over here in the UK that he should be given the "Community Service Award" tab by his name. It clearly states that it is for

"Selfless actions on behalf of individual collectors. This differs from the Patron award above in that the recipient need not serve our GDC community at all, but, rather, serves individual collectors or the collecting community in some significant capacity."

I can't think of a better way of serving the collecting community than encouraging new & future collectors.....

Cheers
Don

I second Don's nomination. Couldn't think of a more deserving recipient.

Thank you for the kind words, gentlemen. I have met some of the best folks here on line. I try to only offer an opinion if I think it is valid or helpful to a discussion, and even with my legendary lack of ability with SS runes have greatly enjoyed this hobby through the years. I have received one referral and will see what I can do to help the young man with his collection.
Thanks again to all of you.
Cheers,
-Mike
