I think we need more pictures of the dagger in question to help with value. The pictures in the link are nice to look at, but not close enough to value a dagger.

Best, John

Yes that's the one but my pictures do not do it any justice.

The one from Lakeside is in better condition than the one I had but is it in better condition by $1500.00 worth? Confused (Especially in today's current market)?

I agree with you that they're going up in price, (I think they always will). It's just that they're a little harder to shift at the moment.

You have to take into account:

- When did Lakeside sell his, (as a comparison)?
- Today's current market
- The Dealer's markup
- What a buyer is willing to pay

Somewhere amongst all of that and Carlos1's original question, will give him a fairly good estimate as to what price to ask for the one he has.

We could all argue forever on what the price should be on any dagger, where the asking price and selling price could be vastly different.

The value of a dagger is the price that someone is willing to pay for.
That said, prices for SS daggers are all over the place and do fluctuate greatly from one dealer to another.
For example, if you go on Brian Madearer's web site, you will see plenty of SS RZM selling for no less than $ 5000 USD, its worst conditioned SS RZM EM going for $ 3500 USD.
Wink
I have to agree that today's market is a bit tough and the economic climate is certainly hurting.
For examples, I have never seen so many great daggers being offered in the "FOR SALE" classifieds and they DO NOT sell.
I have seen lately, bargained SS Himmlers being offered and no one was interested.
I have seen bargained Luft 2nd and Army daggers selling at prices that we were seeing 5 years ago.
Talked to a few dealers and they are all saying that business is tough.

The price will depends on "how much" do you really want the dagger.
I've just recently bought a dagger and did pay full retail, but really wanted to have it.
Some would say that I'm crazy but I feel that we are on this planet for only a short period of time, and why not make the best of it. Big Grin

Sdp.
the final story of this SS 1198-39 is :

I bougth it from Paul last year 4000 US.
The dagger is one of the nicest Rzm with that code Paul have sold in 2008.

I collect only early makers of SS daggers but this was sooo nice so i buy it asap Wink

Then Carlos need SS dagger he told me. He have searched around , and not be able to find what he looking for. He wants a NM dagger .

I sell the dagger to Carlos for the same price, because we live in the same country and he is a friend of mine.
---
Now we are coming to the point WHY carlos make this tread Wink ( he search for a price compared to the LC dagger)
He liked my Land Custom dagger and we do a intern trade.Fast & simple Big Grin
Thay are in the same pricerange today.
The SS 33 is back into my collection with all of my other SS daggers Big Grin and Carlos have the Land custom i have no vibes for anymore.

If i sell this nice SS dagger in future. It will cost the new owner the same IMO Wink

( Pat thank you for replying Wink )

Jarle/Carlos:

I think that was a fair trade. And both daggers are superb examples of their kind.

I also agree with Pat. The dealer prices are what items sell for (or close to). It is what we pay to these dealers for having them search it out, research it and provide it to us with a guarantee.

When we deal with other collectors, though, we all want a discount. Why? Because we don't have the peace of mind that one gets from reputable dealers.

If we don't think the price and the risk is worth it, then we don't have to buy it from a dealer or from a collector.

As it was trade that the 2 of you felt comfortable with, why ask the original question?

In my opinion knowing dealers, you did the correct deal between yourselves. You would have been offered around $2000 tops from a knife dealer!,,, MUCH better to deal amongst yourselves, learn learn learn what to look for in these blades! Then you can be confident to buy from a collector friend! Why pay double bubble from a dealer and that includes myself in the past,,, Confused Confused Red Face

It seems that is what is happening anyway from what I hear. Excellent point Hooper.
I hear that there are many deals going on between collector to collector now. I hear about some so I know there has to be more like the one between Carlos and LH. Dealer "action" has slowed with the economy. So for the guys that said that Militaria will never "soften" well I guess the guys that said you can't eat your Tunic or pay your mortage with your dagger are right..at least the way I see it.
But that being said..there are items in most of our collections that are choice that we can sell to another collector today with a phone call. That's the difference when you collect quality/rarity/desirability
But look at the deal that Carlos and HL did. Straight up and win-win. -Congrats on that deal boys! Wink

-serge-

The problem with SS and SA RZM daggers is that they can deteriorate over time no matter what kind of care you give them, so I won't pay top dollar for one because they just don't warrant the price. What you pay is your business so keep it that way!
