I found this recently:

it's a 9-pound, foot-long bronze alloy (?) projectile, about 50mm, with a threaded base
and tiny holes just upstream of there around the circumfrence. it also has threaded
holes along one side that I guess was for mounting it to wood to make a commemorative
souvenir. (there's also a light lacquer coating.)

looks like a cold war piece, but fired from what? I dunno why but I'm thinking
an aircraft round of some kind. help please?

any thoughts as to value?

I should add there are no markings. Do you think it may be a rocket shell, jerry?

thanks for any input!

I never saw a shell like that. it's much more rounded than most of the WWII US ones I have seen. and the tiny holes in there are odd.

I'll see if I can get one of my ordnance guys to take a look.

Sure is a neat looking piece though!

thanks jerry!

I was thinking cold war, maybe 1960s? and possibly "rocket" 'coz it has these dozen or so tiny venturis (if that's what they are) 'round the bottom.

plus the surface is extremely smooth and the machining is very fine - so close tolerances mnust have been important to ... whatever it was used for!

cheers,

david

Is it possible that this is part of a naval speed measuring device ?

I have vague memories of seeing shell-shaped devices with fins on the back that were towed behind ships to help measure speed.

very interesting, dave.

maybe I'll try one of the military history museums here in the wash dc area, or possibly naval air systems command or naval postgrad. school.

thanks again guys!
