I'm repainting an SS scabbard; I've taken it down to bare metal. It has some pitting I need to fill first.

Anyone have any thoughts on filler, primer, or paint? Would spray or brush application be better?

I've searched the forum and can't find much beyond someone's recommending enamel, and 3-fingered Louie refilling his with kerosene, "mesquite tears" and metal sanding dust.

Thanks,
hoel

I do auto restorations. I dont know if that qulifies me for repainting daggers though. A nice product for fixings rust pits is evercoat metal glaze. (After rust is removed of course) The metal glaze has a thin consistancy and sands easily. After sanding that, a good filler primer should be used. 2 part urethane primers are best, as lacquer primers are brittle and will shrink over time. After priming and sanding with 400-600 grit sandpaper you can paint. Spraying the paint will give the nicest job. I hope this info can help you.

Thanks, painter. That sounds like good advice.

I located the Evercoat metal glaze easily enough. I also found a urethane 2 part filler primer under the brand of "SprayMax". Is that a decent one?

What kind of spray paint would provide an auto restoration quality finish?

Ive never heard of that brand. I always use either Dupont URO or PPG K36. Its more expensive than other brands, but you pay for what you get. As for painting it, if you know someone who has auomotive spray guns that would be the best. I have not found any spray paints that give the type of finish I like. Maybe someone else knows of a good spray can product.

If you live close to VA, I could paint the scabbard for you.

I'm in New Mexico, but thanks for the offer. I appreciate the advice. If I could get it to look anywhere near as good as most restored cars I've seen, that would be great.
