Good advice tiep. That is one expensive piece of junk - enough to put a new collector off for life...

We all say and hear buy the books. True, but there is no reference out there quite as valuable as 1st hand experience. Go to the shows and feel and hold these things in person. Ask a kind seasoned collector good questions. The buy the books, study the forums, hande the artifacts.

Sword-fish....great effort on your part!! I thinks some people probably think that your just trying to scare them away from a good piece and they get paranoid and/or greedy. However, your intentions are right on the money..good job!!

Hi Lar, thanks. Prior to you posting I deleted my message as it was too long winded.
The gist of what Lar is referring to was a statement where I had said I always offer help to a new collector wherever I can..if that means pointing out a bad peice prior to his/her pruchase, I will. Lars point is that some people take it the wrong way when I try to help and belive i'm trying to pull a shaningan and close the deal in a back room arrangement, which I don't nor ever would.
I should also add that my opinions and the help I offer is limited to areas of collecting in which my knowledge base is relatively sound. I would never offer a buy/don't by opinion on an SS '33 or '36. I don't know a fake one from Richard Simmons.

Before I poneyed up with the money to buy The Books (T.W., etc) I was dumb enough to try and find books in the library.
I don't know if it is just South Florida or most public libraries but they have intentionally removed all / or most reference to anything Nazi.
When asked, the librarians were almost in shock at such a question. "Oh no! We don't have any books like that!"
Can you say, "Censorship"?

Interesting thread so I followed up a little. I looked at the library this afternoon. Between war histories, country histories, and bios, I counted 73 non-fiction books with a swastika on the cover and I probably missed some in other sections.
There were also some books that showed the value of collectibles and some WWII edged weapons were included. There were a couple of books on US and and German uniforms and weapons.
I took a copy of TW's Navy book and asked the librarian if they stocked this sort of thing. The answer was that the library purchased reference books that were in high demand but did not purchase books like the Navy book because of limited appeal. She said that if books like that were given free of charge to the library, they would be stocked in the reference section.

Dave, I can only conclude it is a regional thing then. I'm in South Florida and I checked three libraries with no success. There are many people down here who think anything German is verboten!

I hate to tell you all, but we are a very silent minority. Collecting TR items is NOT like collecting coins, etc.. Ron Weinand Weinand Militaria

You are correct Ron. This hobby is not at all like collecting coins or stamps and it attracts all types: mostly normal & some nut jobs. As my name indicates I am a clergyman and have collected off and on since the early 1960's. I don't talk too much about it except to close friends and family. I can just imagine what some members of my congregation would think.. Cheers, -Mike

hay rev.mike there was a major in my unit who was also a youth pastor. he had a collection that would have made Himmlers heart jump. he had a "war room" FULL of banners, flags, desk eagles, uniforms, weapons, you name it he had probebly had it. he even had what looked to be a warbird stamped 22 bolt action. he was the same way he said only a hand full of people had ever seen his collection between the army and the church he diden't want to take the risk of showing it off
