If you are looking at a HJ knife, regardless of its condition, how high do you value a scarce maker? I guess most of us are prepared to pay more for, lets say a Böker than for a Schuttelhofer, but how much more? Personally, I like the rare ones, and sometimes I pay about 100 usd more for a rare maker, than I would have done for a common one in the same condition. How about you?
And wich makers are you willing to pay the most for?

And how much more are you willing to pay for an early one instead of an RZM? And the transitionals?

These are the rarest in my Dad's opinion in maker mark (not RZM) form. Its not know if some of these makers even made an early one but a rzm has been identified by Dad or some of his collecting friends. We have not personally seen examples of these makers. Lance

Price/collectability wise the RZM only with motto is rarest, then the early rare makers then the transitionals (some people value transitionals more than early makers), then early common makers and then the RZMs. at least this is how we look at them. Lance

That is how I look at them too, but the qustion stands. It was meant more like a beginning of a disscussion, but noone seems to want to discuss it.
Anyway, thanks for your answer.

I'm not a HJ collector but for rare TM's on dress bayonets I will pay more. How much more depends on several things,

1. Condition of bayonet, mint, exc, etc.
2. Condition of bayonet, mint, exc, etc.
3. Condition of bayonet, mint, exc, etc.
4. Do I have extra money Smile Smile Smile

I'm like most collectors and don't want to say how much that is.

Well, alright, I can understand if you do not want to say how much. But someone could at least have told me to get lost, or something?

I would pay $1000 for any authentic Wulf regardless of condition. Does this help? Lance for Russ

Thanks!
As I said, it was more or less meant as a beginning of a discussion, it was not that I was wondering how much I should pay or something. I now understand people do not want to talk about it, and yes, it may have been naive to try to get them to.

As I said, thanks for answering. Personally, I would not pay that much for a rare maker, I just thought it was interesting to know your view of it. I would pay, say tops 200 more, for a rare maker than for a common one. If I wouldnt get it for that price, I would have let it pass.

I like this topic in a way.I am buying HJs by makers not condition.I do like to have better condition daggers but sometime when collecting makers its hard to find nice ones. Its seems weird latly watching all the HJ daggers that are for sale,I have seen very common makers sell for more than uncommon makers, even in about the same shape. It just tells me that there are not many of us maker collectors out there.
I have a Gustov Voos HJ dagger. The shape is not by anymeans mint or even close but try to find another.I know of 2 and I own one.So to me Yes I would pay more for a uncommon maker than any mint common maker.

Hi, I am a small time collector and like HJ's they are not too expensive. Since I have a few I like to get different makers marks. I recently paid $300.00 for a nice Puma from a guy at work. That was the most I ever paid for a HJ. I like the makers mark and the more stamps the better. For no better reason than I like to look at the stuff!

The answer to this question depends on the type of collector that you are dealing with. Keep in mind that generally, condition is the #1 factor in determining what somthing is worth. The rarity of the maker is #2 or #3 or #4 depending on what the collector is looking for.
Collectors who specialize in one area (like Russ & Sohn) the rarity of the maker is very important.
There are also collectors out there who just want one nice representative piece from every type (IE. one nice heer, one naval, one HJ, etc) to those people the rarity of the maker is of very little importance, condition is everything.
Russ & Sohn may be very happy to pay 1K for a salty Wulf, but who else would (not me Big Grin)? But if you were talking about a Melzer & Feller SA we might have a deal!
Everyone has there area of intrest. Thats what effects what they will be willing to pay. I doubt that you will find two collectors with the same answer to your question. It's all in the eye of the beholder... Wink

Very well said Johnny. Here is an example of what is being talked about.I paid 130.00 more than my set limit on HJ daggers to buy this one just because of the maker.

I have a bottom limit on condition, no matter the maker. However, I love rare and interesting maker marks and will pay, say, 20% or so more for one I like....

I also collect the different HJ knife makers, nevertheless condition remains my most important criteria. No matter how rare, if the knife is a rusty beater or if it has been modified postwar (like those bowie type blades that you can find in the US), I will pass on it.
Collecting the common makers is also fashinating to me because of the small differences in stampings that accur on the blades: the year of production, the makersmark variations,...etc.

Best greetings,

Herman
