Got this from a "Picker" who found it in an estate sale in Northern California.
It's not like the old day but it's still out there guys!

Nice pick-up!! I would say the portapee is orginal just by the way the fraying on it is.

Yes. It was almost glued to the grip. I'm also convinced that the knot in the cord of the porteppe was last tied by the SS officer. Done so to prevent cord "slippage".

I will agree. It makes sense.I just love it when pieces are dug out of the woodwork.

There's something about these "woodwork" finds that really makes them special. Never seeing a collection, dealer or gun show makes them have this unique "time capsule' effect.

Oh yes, before anybody asks, I'm NOT cleaning it.

Serge that is a classic type II. The so-called type 3 or X has a separator in the nose.

Thats not a separator,it's a booger.

Mike is right! I stand corrected. It's a Type 2.

My last was an EK1 and prior to that a few SAs. I've kind of given up now however. But I guess, every so often, a nice hit pops up. And a nice '36 is a really nice hit!

Pat, A "picker" is a person who goes to estate/garage sales and buys anything he/she thinks they can flip for a quick profit. Most of them don't have a store. They mostly sell on e-ban. They "google" their items first and find out its value. For example they type in "SS dagger"...and you know what comes up.

Because of the net, everyones an "expert". I've had some people come up with absolutely ridiculous prices. This person came accross a plain, beat up Eickhorn Wrangel. Rusty scabbard, pitted blade, 0% gilting on hilt. Just a bad example. They wanted $700 for it. They said, "a search of google led me to this guy Tom Johnons site and he sells these for about $1000". I almost sneezed at this woman. Needless to say, i walked away from her and she could not fathom I wasnt interested. Unreal. "experts" everywhere

It's my 1st "woodwork" 36 SS. They are tough to find like this anymore. SA's no, chained SS's yes. At least for me.

Sword-Fish, To follow up on your "expert" post, I would like to state that this was a similar experience on the above dagger.
In the initial contact with the seller we exchanged phone numbers. He proceeds to tell me how he found it out of a Vets estate outside of Placerville, California. How untouched it is, all original, yada ..yada.. Then when we get into discussing price he tells me: "But hey Serge, this is a CHAINED SS dagger! You clean this puppy up and do a couple of things to it and YOU can get $10,000 for it!" "Cus are you fimiliar with Wittmann & Johnson? That's what they get for theirs."
I left the guy with a price I would pay and walked away from it. Thinking I would never hear from him again.
About three weeks later...he emails me saying "OK" he needs some cash to buy out an estate.
What happened in those 3 weeks we can only wonder.

Thought you guys would like to hear "the rest of the story."
