Ah, MW...they are not the "same thing". Each is a different length, condition and story.

Keep in mind that no one, including the original owner of these swords, really needed them, they really just wanted them because they could have them (same as me!). They served only to embellish or complete the uniform and had no other useful purpose.

It all depends on what approach you want to take toward collecting in general. A stamp collector's mentality of a bunch of the same thing with slight variations, or a historian's perspective where one beautiful example is efficient. This way you can accumulate a larger, more diverse representation of TR edged weapons. When I see accumulations of all the same things, it reminds me of looking at someone's spoon collection.

I like JR's perspective, but if you turned Heffner's collection all upside down in a barrel, they'd all look like sisters..

I don't need a couple of the same maker...I just found them and bought them. I just like Luft swords!

In reality though, if I found a great deal on another, I would probably buy it. Why? Because I really like them and yes they are all investments as I have no idea who originally owned them.

I like the 'barrel' analogy...I sure would like to see it personally just to be sure it's true! I promise not to leave fingerprints.

I love Luftwaffe Officer's swords too..

In my first collection, I had sixteen beautiful early silver first model lufts. (wish I still had them) and a couple aluminum examples. My entire collection consisted of over eighty daggers and twenty plus swords and degens, mostly SS.

Sold 80% of it to a wealthy guy in California and built a house on 23 acres near a lake in Wisconsin.

I have a total different philosophy now and I don't really consider myself a collector, per se, more like acquisitions for a private museum (mine) .. History is where it is at for me. I'm more focused and disciplined this time around. And QUALITY is number one ... Not quantity..

I agree with Jr. Maybe it all looks the same to you, but al swords have markings for units, some have school numbers, even engraved swords and scabbards. And as long i do not own all variations, i'm not finished. I do not like to collect daggers, just to less metal for a lot of money, and swords are very collectable, still for a good price. Next to the swords, i collect k98k rifles, and worse, I collect german big ammo (very much metal for less money)

I do like the collectors that do collect items p.e. Army swords, or navy daggers. Better to know much from one kind, than collecting a broad era. But that's personal, and we should leave it that way.

Mike, I think we agree in principle. I have all but stopped collecting edged weapons for the chase and history of Allach porcelain pieces.

If someone wanted to buy all my edged stuff at one time and the deal was right..I would part with (almost) all of it. As I get older, other things are becoming much more important.

I'm happy you got the lake acreage...that is a dream I have one day!

Of all Third Reich swords. The Luftwaffe examples combine an elegant unique style of its own with the history of a relatively new member of the Wehrmacht. Some very, very nice swords!! FP
