Does anyone know the meaning of those different colors (red, blue) of the wool tops of German Army Russian Volunteer caps with the black lambs wool sides ?? Do the colors represent different Provinces ??

The colours were as follows - Red for Don and Kuban Cossacks Cornflower Blue for Terek Cossacks Yellow for Sibir Cossacks
The type of fur cap varied too. The low fur cap of black fur was worn by Kuban and Terek cossacks (called Kubanka) A Higher and narrower at the top cap was worn by Don and Sibir cossacks (called Papacha). Don one was black fur, and Sibir one was white fur.
Hope this helps.

PS - the four Cossack groupings constituted the four traditional Cossack 'armies' or nations. The reply I sent is the official view, however photographic evidence shows Don cossacks with Kubanka, too, so it is obvious some mixing and matching of styles may have occurred.

David, thanks very much for the valuable information ! I have only one more question,- are the "+" tresse designs sewn to these tops having to do with rank?? I'ver seen a wide (about 15mm) silver flatwire tresse, & also a much narrower silver bullion cording-type that's about 6mm wide. Are there any regulations as to the width of tresse being for specific ranks ??
