The current crisis also has its benefits: I recently picked up this beautifull Imperial Navy Eickhorn at a very reasonable price...

That is one of the nicest Imperial navies I have seen. Special scabbard and that grip is fantastic.

Beautiful dagger! I started looking for one at the SoS but only saw a hand-full and none were anywhere near as nice.

Are you sure it is period????? I really mean this......The dagger is not old...The grip is fossil ivory mammoth The trade mark is wrong and look at the different colors of brass (scabbard throat etc....screws look new no wear..)They are reproducing Imperial navies with this Eickhorn trademark... Scabbard is not the imperial high workmanship... I'm sorry.. Regards: James

Gentlemen, thank you for the additional compliments.
Damast, also thank you for your opinion, I have sent you a personal message with a request for additional information.
I am still interested in other expert opinions: positive or negative with clear objective observations.
I will show extra pictures (that I still have to take) of the separate parts of this dagger
Best greetings,
Herman

I agree with James. A lot of things just don't look correct. A lot of different colors. The scabbard engraving looks thin. It certainly has been recently cleaned with much of the original finish on most parts removed. The rather severe age and wear on the grip don't match the rest of the piece at all. Blade is suspect. This piece needs close examination in hand by someone very familiar with Imperial pieces.

This double squirrel usually has "CE" under it? Can you measure the distance between the crossguard tips?

This time the sceptics have convinced me: I return this dagger asap.
It is just unbelievable with this hobby: as soon as you get out of your specialised domain, you get ripped of... maybe that is what makes collecting fascinating??
Anyway, thanks a lot for all the comments, this is clearly the best dagger collecting site!
Best greetings,
Herman

Beste Herman. Dit is een goed besluit van Dir. Met vriendelijke groet.
Gentlemen, it is sad for a collector when one of his first Imperial pieces are bad. But I think it is a good decision to return this item asap to the seller. It is always the same: Ask before buying. This is a great forum ! Best; Flyingdutchman

Herman,
I am really not an expert on Imperial daggers. BUT... I have seen several repro Imperial Navy daggers for sale in the last few months on different European auction sites. All of them has the same blade with the same Eickhorn Tm like yours.

It's a shame but you must become expert in a limited area to collect today-or network with others who are. Even then there are many differences of opinion. Collecting everything? You WILL get stung!

That's the right decision. although it's a great looking grip on 2nd look just too many red flags. Hey Herman we are all learning here. Even though traditionally Imperial stuff has been safer than 3rd Reich better and better fakes keep turning up...

Sad that someone would go threw this much trouble to rip someone off. MIO it looks really nice but the patina not evenly matching really looks odd. Live an learn! check this out http://www.wkc-collection.de/english/50marine.html

This is a great reference thread. Look at the colour of the crossguard and the scabbard. This is going in my archives!! Keep watching this dagger will appear again at an auction site near you....

I can share the frustration and the sentiments. Being a "Generalist" collector today is becoming more and more difficult. I collect primarily what I know..which fortunately happens to be what I enjoy. A couple years back I began badge collecting, focusing specifically on KM badges. It was a steep learning curve as the fake badges are getting better and better.
Right now WKC is producing anniversary daggers and sabers. An Imperial navy dagger is one of thier limited runs. They are nice looking pieces but not cheap.

Again, thanks for all the help! This morning, I brought the dagger back where it came from. It was the difference in colors of on scabbard that got me suspicious. Several GDC members confirmed this and brought in other elements that I had not noticed. When I put the piece next to some of my Kriegsmarines, it became obvious that this was no good... For your reference, I post a couple close-up shots, that I took before returning it. Someone put a lot of effort in fabricating this... Some might say now:.. "...of course it is fake...", but believe me, at a show, in the crowd, it is not that obvious. Best greetings, Herman
