This not an area that I have looked at before. Am I seeing things, or is the Swastika off centre?
It looks as though it's twisted. If you draw a line down through the centre of the shield the arms of the Swaz are not centred in the shield.
Should this be?
Cheers Don

I agree Don ..That Swas looks like it's tipping too much to the left (not centered) ..I don't know how many variations there were but that doesn't look right . I remember owning one years ago and the bottom of the "G" in the word "RETTUNG" dipped a little below the line, as if it was larger than the rest of the letters and it was stamped on the rim

I apologize for the delay. I seemed to have missed this thread. From what I have seen, I believe that this medal has a chance. Can you please post some closer scans of both sides?
Also, does the rim have any maker markings, or a "casting" ledge?
Here are a couple of mine for comparison. All of the details SEEM to be present... although, I would respectfully request some larger and clearer scans of both sides to be sure.
You will note that one example is of the traditional silver version. Note the hallmark on the rim. The less attractive medal is a later war zinc type. Note that all of the silver wash has long left the medal.

Hi Don, I believe the reason for the off center appearence of the Swaz is because the medal is not sitting perfectly flat on the scanner glass... check out the ring. Definately not a straight on shot. I also see that being the cause of the "G" issue as well. Regards Paul
