I have one. Your chain is wrong. The chain you have is for a Feldgendamarie gorget. As you mentioned it should be a series of round links. You chain is real so it is 60+ years old as well (which is why it seems to match). There are a few dealers I know that specialize in gorgets, you mail want to email one and see if they have an extra chain. It won't come cheap, but it would be worth it to me to have it be correct. I also have one and I agree that chain is wrong, but the gorget itself is really a nice one.

It is a nice one! P. 52 of the Deeter and Odegard "gorget" book depicts this type gorget with the same chain. However, the text notes two types of chains have appeared on this gorget, but "it is believed that the close-formed wire link chain is the correct chain for this gorget." Did yours, by chance, come from England?

I highly recommend the book, "Gorgets of the Third Reich," by Richard E. Deeter and Warren W. Odegard (D.O Enterprises, 1977). If you have the slightest interest in gorgets, it is indispensible, plus it is loaded with a multitude of era photos depicting other aspects of uniform wear, etc.

Judas,
The gorget that you have shown is in my collection (no problem) and is the "Funkschutz" version which has a recognized different chain from the "Streifendienst" SS counterpart.
However, I have seen the "Streifendienst" gorget having both types of the chain in discussion attached.

I wondering if someone can tell me what type of gorget this loose chain belongs with? Please note that the links are more squared then the examples shown above:
