What happend to the Postschutsz Leader's dagger after the organisation became part of the SS in 1942? Was it still in wear? I don't believe it was in production, especcialy after heavy bombing of Solingen in 1942, but when were produced the last ones?

After '42, all dagger production regardless of organization was pretty much over. As for wear, I have no idea, that's an interesting question. Perhaps someone else can answer that.

I wouldn't be so sure about the use of daggers after 1942. I have more than one document concerning the issue of NPEA Student Daggers as late is 1944 and will show them in my updated reference due out in early 2007. Ron Weinand Weinand Militaria

I have a picture dated jan. 1943 that show a HJ leader so certainly they were worn after 1942.

I do not remember the source, but in 1941 according to special order carrying of daggers was forbidden, in 1942 there was an exception from this order only for SS. I don't know about such expection for paramillitary organizations.

I believe this order was for military men on active duty only, not for civilian or political organizations as we see MANY dagger pictures taken during the war and even then the military ignored such orders on the home front. Ron Weinand Weinand Militaria

Back to the question. Postshutz leader's is one of the latest introduced daggers. How many were made? At least approximetly? The biggest number I've seen at the CG was around 2k. And why the Postshutz bayo are more rare than leaders? In 1942 there were about 45 k of the personel in the DRP...

In the fall of 1943 I was in the hospital in Regensburg for one month. During that time my unkle, who was a major in the German army on furlow dropped in to visit me. He was all decked out in his dress uniform wearing a dagger. He unhooked the dager and let me play with it which was the high point of his visit. Thus, I'm positive that there was no such order regarding the wear on daggers by military personnel.

Sokol: concerning numbers you have to remember that only SOME of the Postschutz Daggers were numbered, not all as these were produced and used without numbers later in the period. Also, the ones without numbers and letters are a little shorter. Next, I believe from the Knots on the Postal Dress Bayonet that only NCOs were using the M98 Dress Bayonet and not every enlisted man. The men worn the standard M98 Field Bayonet in my opinion. Also, I am sure that not every NCO had the Postal marked bayonet or we would see more of them. I don't think the serial numbers on the bayonet go too much higher than around 1600. JMO, Ron Weinand Weinand Militaria

So, Ronald, can we estimate that the total of marked edged weapons of the DRP were not more than 5K (leader's + NCO)?

I would say that is about correct. I have a Postschutz Bayonet on the line with the rare knot. Will try to picture it as soon as I get it and it will be forsale as it will be a duplicate. Ron Weinand Weinand Militaria PS: My Postal without numbers came with an M33 SS EM out of the same house by the US veteran. Probably an SS man that became a Postschutz NCO.

Wow! Thanks for sharing that Manfred. In a hobby where you think everything has been told, you find that there is so much more to learn.

Ron,
That bayonet is surpassed only by the just plain mint look of that knot, great rig.

Floridaguyz1: You beet I'm getting along there - and I'm still around going strong. In 1943 they had just introduced penicillin otherwise I wouldn't been going nowhere.
