we all know that winston chuchill said britain and the u.s. are two counties seperated by a common language. but is the word accoutrements spelt differently in u.s. english?. i ask, in all seriousness, as i`ve noticed the spelling on this forum section, and that of most of our american cousins, to be `accouTERments, not as we spell it, accouTREments. is it a dr webster `strikes again` example?.

blue, Hello and I've noticed the same thing! I believe your spelling is correct and it is pronounced accordingly. The "over-here" is simply a case of mis-spelling! Regards, Leipzig

Just noticed this post--- If you drove an English sports car in the old days you used British words for certain car parts--
Nave plate---hub cap Bonnet--the hood Boot--the trunk lid Fascia locker--glove box knockoffs--wire wheels Rev counter-Tach Reversing lights--back up lights
and many others I have forgotten.

"accouterment or accoutrement" is the way that it appears in my dictionary. The root word is accouter. If you look under accoutre, it sends you back to ACCOUTER for a definition. So, I suppose that either way is acceptable, but it does seem to reference to the "er" spelling first. But then again, it is a "Yank" dictionary.
Best Regards, Robert
