Two things that I would like to know, - What about his COA (Certificate Of Authenticity)?
- What will other dealers react? Will they be happy because there is another less competitor in the market? The wont face customers saying "ohh, Im able to get that at 1/3 the price at Detlev"?
Cheers, Ibrahim.

if you run outa toilet paper your set... I've heard and read about those Niemann COA's for a long time. I believe many collectors will need another one...might find that it maybe harder to find. -serge-

Many of the 'lifetime guarantee' guys in this hobby are getting a little long in the tooth.
What happens to their COAs and their guarantees when they hang up their spurs or pass on?
Some collectors are going to be very surprised at what they really have in their collections, IMHO.

someone told me the other day it was a April Fools Day joke!,,,,but no he's really going. A couple of the other forums have been haveing a jokingly good time with this retirement.. But really,, what happens 3 years from now when you find out your $5k. piece is fake? ,,where do you go to? or contact? Do these guys really think he'll make good with a refund?, ,It is impossible to do so and maybe the best thing he can do is start enjoying/spending and have a good time while he can! I got a feeling some might have to hear, 'sorry, just don't have it to give back, besides, back then I thought it was good'.. ...................

And this will be the footnote in the collectors field in another 40 years!!! your dead on John!!!! While some of these guys retire on manys hard earned $$$. "oh its been a rewarding trip serving the collecting community yada yada..."Its sotra like pro wrestling. they are all mad while at the arena but after the show they all set and have a beer together and are best buds. ahh least I'm not buying humped up Z28's and RS/SS's. I'm off to hide eggs outside for my daughter, now thats where the rubber meets the road anyway. Bret Van Sant

Well said Rob B. I've been saying this for years, do your own frigging homework before you purchase, that way the only person to blame is yourself. COA's are not worth the paper they are written on, never asked for one and don't need them.

,,i dont believe that will be the case,,if its "real" today,it will be "real" then as well,so for the new collectors of today, they will be just as liable to make the same mistakes and assumptions about the items as we have,,,so if you cant tell the wheat from the chaff now,it will be just as difficult then, with all the high quality fakes of helmets medals, uniforms, etc, etc,,,,

I agree with Rob and Baz. Do your own homework and don't buy anything until you are up to speed, unless you are talking about $10 tinnies or $25 pins.
It is much easier today with the Internet to do some basic research but there is no substitute for handling the items in person.
One interesting point - In conversations over the last many years, I fairly often heard about old collections that were found to be full of fakes, fantasies, and parts pieces. Collections put together decades ago before the Internet.
The Internet has it's share rogues and fakers, but it does allow quick access to data and exchange of information.

I was showing a shoebox full of repo junk to some fellow collectors yesterday I culled from a collection the was assembled in the 60s. Age alone is NO protection against fakery. As far as I'm concerned May 8,1945 is a very important date to the 3rd reich collecting comunity. This is the day that the fakery of 3rd Reich regalia began. Jim

For Niemann to retire now was IMO a smart move. The market has slowed down. He's had to refund more and more bad items that had "slipped thru" due to "staff". There were more questions being asked out his COA's. And there were more threads in recent times questioning the authenticity of many of his items. You got to hand it to the guy, he knew when to bail. Especially since many of those new generation of "Super-Fake" high-end medals were starting to get noticed by collectors in Europe and a few collectors here in the states. -See Ya!- -serge-

Rob, now that's scary regarding your friends trust only in a few select dealers and without doing any research or homework on his own. YIKES!

The adage "buy the item, not the story" applies in full force to COA's. After all, it is just a glorified opinion. There is at least 1 exception, and that would be Boyles COA's for TK rings. Other than that, you really have no one but yourself to blame if you buy a bad item ,,, And certainly so if you don't find out about it until 3 years later.
