Have you Eickhorn bayonet collectors seen how the factory fit the blades to the hilt. I have only seen this on the later TM (1941-) It appears that after the blade was riveted to the hilt, the assembler would take a tool and peen the under side of the cross-guard(see the green in the attached photo). I have two of these late war bayonets and both blades have been fit the same way. Shows that they were taking shortcuts during the last days of the war. I just picked up the bayonet at a gun show. I didn't need another one but the condition was great for a late war piece.

That’s really a very nice late commercial production bayonet. With I think "late" being a relative term - with (as near as I have been able to determine) early 1942 being the probable termination date for dress bayonet production.

That said, I understand the concept of tightening the fit of a crossguard opening to the blade by peening. But what is that green stuff?? Some kind of filler or shim material?

The green is just a high-lite I put in to show the peening, sorry for the confusion.

I've got a '35-'41 Eick shortie with the same peening. It's nicely hidden underneath the leather but a little sloppy.

Terry, You made my day! I've been wanting to bring this up for some time. I too have one like it, when I first got it I got that bad feeling when I looked under the washer. It looked boosted to me because it's on a short Pioneer. And for the TM, and type collector, this would be on the rarity list for the " I wants".

Terry, since you have two examples to look at, and you and Billy are the the detail guys when it comes to grip plates and such. how do the grip plates on yours fit? Also, these look a bit different than the standard.

Terry BTW, this area is very hard to photo. I had a difficult time trying to take a pic from both sides. The one side is struck much more prominately than the other.

Photos look good to me. I used my digital microscope on mine. Its nice to see they were consistent. By the way very nice bayonet

The photos of both bayonets look good to me, although I must say that I am impressed by the overall quality of the image using the digital microscope. And now that it’s been explained, I can see the peening on Terry’s bayonet better. It was really throwing me off, and I had visions of something like a green anaerobic thread locking compound being used to lock the blade in place.

As for the question on grip plate fit, it seemed to me from the first photo that there was some misalignment upward. Which would not be surprising I think for a later manufactured item. Regards to All, FP

Both your pieces look good to me, I'm thinking this was just something they resorted to later in the 3R edged weapon making period? I particularly love that over the shoulder Pioneer, wow! One thing about this thread, I feel a hell of a lot better about mine.

my grip plate fit looks about the same. that was the 2nd red flag i seen at first. now i feel much better about it.

That's a nice thread guys :-) I have seen several of these late production pieces with the Eick Over the Shoulder logo. Although of a lower standard of construction, they are unique and nice nevertheless. I love them. Just one more type to add to my collection.
