Is this thing real, or some kind of fantasy piece? It sure bid high fast.

It's real and pretty expesive - check T.Wittmann honor bayonets in HJ knife section.
They go above 3 grands.
I still kick myself for seeling one of these few years ago ...

Wittmann is selling them for $3,000 up but you don't see anyone buying them. He has had them for quite a long time now..

They come with the SS motto also. There are generally seen unmarked, by Anton Wingen and Carl Wustoff. Anyone seen one by a different maker? I would like to see a closeup of the pommel. On regular HJs, someone in the north of England in the late 70's early 80"s copied the engraving on real knives but s ure way to tell is first its a regular HJ and second the lines overlap in the southwest quadrant and don't meet in the southeast quadrant. He said he would email more pictures. HJ is not really my forte, but this one is interesting.

The fittings of the grip plates on this piece look real poor on these pictures.

Just like Reds said: no one is even buying these from Wittman. It seems to be more difficult to buy a qualitatif standard HJ knife than this stuff: Wittman (and other big dealers) has no standard HJ's for sale on his website, but several of these bayonets...

Much rarer than an SS or NPEA dagger. I played with one of these as a child and found it a few years ago still in a tree. Had a member dress it up for display. They are one piece construction. The blade is a part of the pommel, not bradded to it like regular HJs. Russ

This one had a buy it now of $2000 when listed. It'll probably end above $2000 based on Wittmann prices. But I agree, the retail prices of these took a huge jump to above what collectors are willing to pay. The price will catch up eventually, maybe 2015? hehehe

First I thought this was just another HJ Knife or an item that wasn't even a legit item in the first place. As interesting as it seems to be it's all new to me and I really am not sure I quite understand just what it is. Am always looking to learn about something new in this hobby though! JohnJ

These types of HJs are really unique. Too many collectors, like JohnJ, are unfamiliar with them and they tend to be overlooked. In my "NPEA Daggers and Associated Knives" I have one from my collection in color. I can't tell you how many collectors have contacted me asking me to sell it. Condition on these is very important. If you have a near mint one, prices in excess of $5000.00 are not that uncommon. I have been offered that amount for mine several times, but it took me too long to find this one and mine is simply not forsale at any price.

Ron, What can you tell me about the HJ long bayonet? I have heard that they were issued to a special group within the HJ. How rare are they, and what are they going for?

There are more copy HJ Bayonets than originals. I would NEVER buy one without X-ray the grip insignia for attachment and then you have to look carefully at the grip inset area and the rivets.
KNOW YOUR DEALER and be prepared to spend and arm and a leg for one.
I have seen both long and short HJ bayonets that were originals.

What exactly should I be looking for regarding the attachment of the grip insignia, and are the blades you have seen known to be plated?

It ain't that easy. If it were, everyone would be an expert. All the originals that I have seen have been plated. The diamond should have the prongs folded to the center, through the slot in the black plastic grip plate, then spread in opposite directions flat under the grip plate on the back side. You need to look at a few originals and see what you are looking for in an original.

These things are not exactly lining up at my door for me to examine if you know what I mean. I do know of one example that I would like to take a closer look at. I've kind of put it on the back burner due to some plate loss on the blade. Possibly rarity will trump condition on this one. I'll post the x-rays when I get the chance. Any specific makers on these bayonets? Thanks for your input.

I did manage to get this one after eBan killed the auction, for half of the dealer list price. Actually, it's very neat, quite heavy compared to the standard HJ

Yes, this was the one up for auction. The seller had a buy it now of $2000, I offered him $1500 after eBan killed it, and he said he'd be happy with $1750 shipped. He emailed me the links to Wittmann's site, so he knew what the dealer prices are. I think $1750 is actually a fair price for this condition..which is actually exc plus in my opinion. I'm happy to have one, though now I'm thinking I need the round swaz and diamond swaz versions...hehehehe With Ron Weinand's new book in the works, who knows, they may actually start selling at the dealer prices.
