Saw this bayonet tonight, comes with a standard black painted scabbard in very nice condition, Carl Jung Krebs maker. Don't know much about etched/engraved bayonets...is 250$ reasonable for this piece? Thanks, Chris...

I am not a big fan of hand engraved bayonets like this but this is a very nice one. The engraving appears original to me from the photos and I would certainly pay $250 for it.

Chris,
Just a couple of questions. First, is that real staghorn on the hilt? It looks like wood that "looks" like staghorn. Second, isn't it unusal for the inscriber to use the reverse blade for the inscription? Of the inscriptions I have seen like this are usually on the obverse. Also during the Third Reich period I'm not so sure that "flowers" were a perferred blade design. Perhaps Houston could weigh in on this.

Wheter it's period or not. It appears to be jewler ingraved with gold inlay. And looks very good to me.

I've seen flowers on bayonets that were either personally engraved in the field or done rather unprofessionally. Compared to many of the motifs used & slogans of the 3R period, I've always found the inclusion of flowers to be a little strange. This one does look like it was nicely done by a jeweler as Dow Cross points out. I did notice the grip composition but thought this was possibly due to the (later) period that this particular bayonet was manufactured.

I like it a lot and I think it's 100 % right-and Yes, I would buy it in a minute. I don't find it too unusual that the inscription is on the back. Wayne you know the sometimes even factory remembrance etchings were placed on the back only like this.
I also like the gold filling which is typical of hand engraving of the period.
Krebs made some of the wood grip models that are made to look like stag so that is fine too..
Beautiful engraving like this on steel is almost a lost art today. Almost no one can do it anymore, and if so, very time consuming, and very expensive.

This is directly out of the vets estate, so I have no question on the authenticity of it. I just picked up a lot of other items from the same estate, nice medals, badges, etc. The vets son had actually sold this off, along with a beat up SA Dagger for 250$ to a wannabe nazi toughguy "Harley Dude". Now "Harley Dude" wants to get his money back out of them, and the vets son is now holding these again for me. The price has gone up to 300$ (that doesn't make me happy), is that still reasonable? The grips do feel more like wood than Stag BTW. Thanks, Chris...

Well guys, first of all, if you read my post I never said I thought it was a reproduction. Trust me, if I think it's a reproduction I will say so. I just thought it was a very different type of citation engraving being on the reverse though the lettering font was quite good. I also cannot recall flowers being used very much during the period, period.

Here is one I acquired directly from a veteran in the late 1960's. Notice the engraving is also on the reverse side. It reads "Weinachten 1939. Stab 2 Pi. Pk. Kp. 561". The engraving is also gold filled. Manufacturer is J.A. Henckels.

Wonderful pieces. I think that the quality of the inscriptions is amazing and certainly TR. I have yet to find one like it. JAN
