Hi
Can anyone help. I have just seen a Fallschirmjaeger Parade Bayonet with 43FZE across the top of one side of the blade just below the handle and 6331 in the same palce on the other. Can anyone tell me what they might signify?

There appear to be makers marks on the pommel but they are very small and very worn - could be A519. Any ideas?

The engraving on the blade is Mit Unsern Fahnen Ist Der Sieg and Fallschirmjaeger Swastika Regiment.

Regards

James

This is a fake.

fze is the manufacturer's code for F.W.Holler.

6331 is the individual weapon number.

This is a standard issue German WW2 S84-98 bayonet which has had spurious engravings/etchings added.

A lot of these were done in the 1960/70s in the UK.

They were maked with all sorts of SS units, U-boats, Luftwaffe units and concentration camps.

I have heard that some are being produced in Eastern Europe.

Hope this helps

That is very interesting. I did wonder because it looks like a regular bayonet but with an engraved blade. So what would distinguish a correct Fallschirmjaeger parade bayonet?

James,

As a rule, I'd suggest you stay away from any bayonet that even remotely looks like the one you posted. Combat bayonets, as a general rule, were not etched/embellished like dress bayonets. These are fantasy pieces, tarted up postwar. If you can get one cheap, they're fine as a letter opener.

Wayne's book is great. I don't know what I would do without it.

Wayne, when are we going to see a revised version?

It is true that no real S84/98 bayonets were etched. However other types of German bayonets were legitimately etched. An example being a fireman's bayonet upon retirement. Also KS 98 bayonets were etched.

I agree with bayonut, this is totally wrong I'm afraid.

You sometimes see some quite rare varities of the S84-98s totally ruined by the addition of these markings.

Thank you everyone for your advice and help with the question of etched bayonets. And I will buy Wayne's book. You have all been great.

The guy who offered me the bayonets in the photo that his father passed on to him is not a happy bunny. He thought he was sitting on a gold mine.

James,

You can assure the fellow that all the bayonets in the picture are fakes.

Still--all is not lost. Some people collect these even knowing they are fakes. Razz You can probably get about $300 each for them. Wink

Here's another one to stay away from. An original Max Weyersberg with a fake blued panel etch. Pretty, but bogus.

Those k98 bayonets were coming from England. The information I had at the time was that an ex Wilkinson Sword employee, possibly an engraver, was embellishing original K98 daggers. He was not doing this to fool anyone it was a hobby that earned him some money. Though I think some nice bayonets were ruined in the process but I also think these are quite aesthetic.

They were appearing at many fairs here and abroad and I think at that point the stories as to their origins begin to take on an air of fantasy. Not from the original source but from the middle men out to make a few quid. I bought mine from such a fantasy source when I started collecting.

They were all finished to a very high standard. triple acid etched. I have about 6 in my collection and in their own rights I think they are collectible after all no more are being played with by the original perp as I suspect he has since passed on. They are being copied but not to the same standard.

As Houston points out they are fetching better money than a standard K98 but you must be sure to get the English ones. A while back they were selling for $200 so already a 50% increase in market value.

If you want to see pics of mine ask and you will receive.
