Skyline makes a very good point. Silver fittings would make sense and woud also explain the "gold" appearance of the fittings in the '87 pictures.
Again, I believe this could be put to rest with a peek under the pommel nut (or any other place that has had limited exposure to the air).

Dave:
In an effort to be fair I sent both photos to a very knowledgable set of friends for unbiased opinions. One says he sides with your opinion and I have the utmost respect for his. He said that the reason I remembr the scabbard as being brown is that I have been looking at Bud's photo for 21 years and that may have clouded my memory. I don't think so but I had to tell you his point of view.

I would like to addvance a possibility, that might answer the problems. The grip inset, would be silver plated. The cross guard has been engraved. This would be on a nickle silver item. The engraving would show the coppery colour, thus to give a good overall finish the cross guard would be silver plated. This would meen the other parts would be silver plated to give an over all like finnish. This is a normal way that items of base metal were and are finnished. Over the years the silver plate will take on a dark blue black apperance. If the piece had been subject to a sulpherous atmospher the darkening would have been enhanced. My humble conclusion is that the piece has aquired an oxidisation over the years. This is the sort of discolourisation that would be valuble to remove.

I see that the thread went way off on a tangent, but the original dagger which started all this is back up for sale. Check out EPier #1796973. And this time it's fully researched and attributed!!!

Hi guys , I also held this dagger in my hands , I was thinking of buying it .
And in my opinion those fittings were not blued , they just got dark over the years .

Dave and Notaguru , it was nice to meet you guys , and maybe we will see eachother this MAX also .
Greetings from Holland , Rob.

Here is a link to the original dagger discussed - not Dave's NSKK

http://www.epier.com/BiddingForm.asp?1796973

Seller is Oldmarketplace with this condition of sale:

"....BID WITH CONFIDENCE. Please ask all your questions before you bid as ALL SALES ARE FINAL unless item was significantly not as described."

As you read through this thread keep in mind that there are TWO different daggers with checkered grips being discussed.

The one that started the thread was being sold on Gunbroker and is currently on Epier.

The second one belongs to SA Dolch.

That one on epier is no way real, the engraving is far far to rough compaired to a quality original one. The original ones are super high quality and a real joy to look at through a magnifying glass.

They did have the Gau stamp on though when they were engraved.
