also, recommendations for the removal of the old (inactive) rest?

Naval jelly will remove it I guess but leave it gray and needing a zillion hours of elbow grease with light steel wool, yes?

hello-i would apply some oil,wuipe it off and nothing else.i think you would hurt it bigtime if you did anything else.nice sword.paul zaya

by the way, any idea if this type had a quillon? where one wd. normally be there's only a tiny hole I'd thuight was a casting glitch - but maybe an attachment point?

also, these things sseem to bring about $1000, sound fair?

by the way I also recently posted another with the same type of heart-shaped guard (WITH quillon) - it's also on this forum...

any other ideas guys? thanks again...

There are a few original Hessian and Brunswick Hangers known , at least ones with cyphers on the blade.The problem with these is that practically of of central Europe and Scandinavia were using these for over a Century and unless there are blade cyphers it extremely difficult to place these.The one I have seen with the cypher of Frederick II of Hesse Cassel is a different type with a half guard and a thumb loop. However, many styles may have been used, and uniformity may not have been adhered to.
