Chris was a member here and because of 'technical difficulties' he can no longer post.

He and his Father have been working on the ultimate copy HR for a while now. A lot of work goes into a project like this.
This jewelers wax come in a variety of forms/shapes and colors. Different colors each have a different property, melting temp , hardness, workabilty [is that a word? Big Grin]..

These photos are also on WAF. I have been in contact with Chris and have obtained permission from him to post the photos here on our forum for study. Thanks Chris!

Here is the beginning of the skull..

remember, its just wax right now.. If theres something you don't like its pretty easy to correct once you have a pretty good wax model and know the techniques, the problem is getting the 'good' wax model, or its start all over again..
Its a lot harder than is sounds..There's many steps, model, rubber mold, wax model, setting up the cast. Each step very involved and requiring a lot of skill.

Here the skull is near ready..

Well, Chris seems to be progressing nicely. Hopefully next we might see the casting process and then the finished rings..
Chris, thanks again , G.

I realise that the mention of MCF may be anathema to some members, but some members here are also members there, so anyway if you can get on that site you should take a look at the proposed HR replica by member 'Josiah' at present in the 'WAX' stage, if that turns out it will be a stunner.

Evgeniy, thanks,,this is the kind of feedback Chris is looking for..

Nr.Nolan, yes there are probably better examples..

Members, this is more art work then an exact copy.. Its usually done with a original ring to start, then a rubber mold is made from it for the wax models...
BUT,this example here from Chris is all done freehand. No wax model to work from. It probably started out as a circle piece of wax, blank!!..
Good luck Chris, keep going and keep us updated. Thanks again, G.

Members,,I use the term lost wax cast alot..and also waxy.. Thats because most of the fakes are made this way.. do some searchs on the internet on 'Lost wax' and 'Investment casting' and you'll see the process..

Chris's example is good to look at.. IF he wanted to he could make any correction we wants with a carving tool or a heated tool. Different color waxes are for different hardness, and he could add on another feature simply by adding a piece of wax!..

Kind of a simple description of one method,,A real ring can be pressed into a semi liquid rubber mold and a then it gets 'cooked' [cured]. The finished mold then gets sliced open ,,the original ring taken out and you then have a rubber mold to pour wax in for the wax models. Corrections can be made to the model,,'engravings' added etc. with even a toothpick! The wax model is then lost wax cast. You lose the model but gain a ring! you can always go back to your rubber mold and make more models!.. With a few molds you can start getting creative and get a skull off one ring and add it to another band etc.. This is usually what the reproduction artists do to confuse new ring collectors by thinking they are getting a new or rare pattern ring when in fact all they are getting is a fantasy...

There are deluxe high zoot machines that inject the wax , vacume molds, spun, all to get the wax in the smallest of spaces [read ,details] to get the best detail out of their fakes..
Heres a simple ,cheap mini lathe. All thats needed is the kit and a drill. Make your bands, add on a skull or carve on some runes etc and then cast away..Simple but in a craftpersons hands can be dangerous..

Neat project. I'm assuming the same method was used to produce the rings on "ssrings.com."

I've just received one of these rings and the quality is just superb. Definitely the best copy honour ring I have ever seen. Weight, dimensions, everything. It is just like having a mint original 1940s-pattern ring. Only difference is the word 'copy', which has very sensibly been included on the inside of the ring. Well done to Chris and his dad! It's a masterpiece.

Robin I would love to see some photos if you get a chance. I have Chris's email but other than that does he have a website going or how can a purchase be made? How much? Chris has helped me out with opinions (like you have been graciuos enough to do yourself Robin) so I would like to support him. Thanks, Marty.

Gaspare, not being an Honor Ring collector and certainly only having nothing more than a basic knowledge of thses, would it be fair to say based on the quality, that these would not only fool a newer collector, but even a seasoned collector as well? Aside form the copy stamp, they sound like they must be quite nice. There are folks out there, which we all are aware of, that are looking to collectors to prey on. If others have the artistic aptitude that Chris does, there could be some trouble on the horizon. Just some food for thought. They do look nice!

Make no mistake...........these copies are good enough to fool seasoned collectors, if the word 'copy' was not there.

However, there are several differences from originals that can be detected under magnification.

If you want a 'wearing' ring, or even one to display as a reasonably priced representative copy, this is definitely the one to go for.

It's much better than the copy on display at Wewelsburg.

Bottom line is, when examining these rings with the naked eye they look like the real McCoy.

The Gahr factory itself would have been proud to have produced them.

As Robin mentioned already,Chris was good enough to mark the inner band 'Copy' [thanks Chris!]...
But I'm sure eventually there will be those who will try and obliterate 'Copy' and try and have the band engraved in order to sell them as originals..
I would say those who are really interested in the HR that its best to arm yourselves with studying and handleing as many originals as possible.
