Can I get some opinions on this navy dagger please, most WKC's I have seen have the brass twist grip wire, this one does not. I would also appreciate some ball park values, and any other observations.
Thanks

Nick, Thanks for the reply, value is about what is being asked!. The fact that the knot does not appear to have been off in a very long time suggests that the grip wire is period, I am just unable to find another example by WKC showing the same traits. Regards

I think £4-500 is way too low for an orange grip/hammered scabbard...

Jonathan's rigth, IMO such a dagger in an E++ to NM condition would normally sell anywhere from £800 to £1200.

Orange grip and an hammered scabbard does add lot's of value to a Navy dagger ( about + 50% more ) as they are much rarer and desirable.

Thankyou sires, I did inform the potential buyer that the value was alot higher than £500 so I feel vindicated. I am sure he will take it once he has read this, I appreciate the help

slightly confused tell me if i am wrong . you are selling the dagger for £500 but the buyer thought this was too high so you posted your question on this forum to get an opinion on value and rarity so that you could get the buyer to view our views and decided to buy? i wish you had stated this when you asked your question iam sure the answers would have been the same but i am sure we would all have liked to know what our coments were actually for

Nick, No, not the case, a friend has the opportunity to purchase this dagger locally for £500 ( nothing to do with me, my website or your estimate ), I was purely asked as a favour for a ballpark value which I supplied prior to this post but wanted the grip wire assessed before confirming my estimate.
No conspiracy !

Wire is strange these knots can be removed tied so never rely on that as proof as being untouched.

True Tom, but to get that dirt and grime back into the same position without showing the clean areas of the knot after the re-tie would take some doing. Its possible I suppose to remove the pommel and grip and re-assemble with the knot still in place, but unlikey and the wear to the wire is consistent with the rest of the peice?.

sorry degens it had been a long day! i have become quite good at un doing these knots and re-tieing them in the same position so that the careas of dirt/wear/discolouration match up takes a time to tease it around i have some grip wire if you would like some
