Very nice Samuel. Beautiful contrast between your reddish grip and golden swaz. Here's my small contribution.

not 100% accurate, but a fair way to determine if the applied gold finish is period Paul

Interesting, Paul do you know of an example that shows no gilt inside the pommel?

Right everyone, remove those pommels and look inside!
Also how was the gold applied? Was the rest of the pommel (other than the underside and swaz) masked off?

I would say probably "Metalised".Entire piece dipped in masking solution, rinsed, then the swaz wiped clean.Rest is bit complicated but straight forward.Neatly stacked on trays, placed in vac furnace where gold wire alloy is vaporised and voila! There will generally be overflash hence the gold shadow underneath where the masking solution is thin.OK class is out!!! This is getting very interesting, Does anyone have a theory if all 2nd luft daggers were produced with gilded pommel Swastikas no matter maker from the very beginning and that most gild has disappeared through the years by wear and cleaning. Maybe some makers didnt use the gilding process at all, Like Paul Hogle Im very interested to know if someone has seen a pommel without any gilt inside at all. I know that Wittman have some theories in the book, but Im curious about other theories as well, Sam,

I concur that the entire pommel was dipped in gilding with only the swaz being exposed to the solution. There is evidence of this gilding inside the pommel of both my Eick Lufts. I also believe not all producers of lufts had the gilding applied. I

Just looked and my eickhorn has gold inside to, never knew that!
I am sure that not all daggers had the gold applied. Maybe this was stopped later on in the war?
