Great picture Paul . At first glance I thought he was an Alpini Trooper ..the cap does have that Black Feather but , the insignia is too small ...and his Collar tabs don't conform to Italian Alpini examples I can find.
Is there a name /date or any info on the back?

"their distinctive headdress; the "Cappello Alpino" with its black feather, which led to them being nicknamed "Le Penne Nere" or "black feathers".

It resembles the hats seen on the troops in Northern Italy around Aosta. The black feather too. The dagger/bayo and uniform should tell. Maybe he is from the part of the Tyrol that used to part of Austria but was given to Italy ?

That could explain it Dave ...Even the pocket Flaps and Uniform Cut look Italian to me.

Thanks

Nothing on back but a family booklet said he was german-Austrian.

Thats why even though the hat looked Italian
I couldn't figure out why since I know he isn't Italian!
