Hello,
normal i´m a collector of German bayonets. But i wan´t to show a german combat helmet out of my family property. this was the helmet of the brother of my grandmother. i get the helmet, the belt complete with buckle and bayonet....so i think it is 100% original.
It is an M40 SS SD helmet with light harsh camouflage (leichter Rautarn), the liner is damaged...but authentic...made by Römer in 1940. the strap is shown in the pictures. the paint is over the stamps und the serial number... but i think it is an Quist helmet. size in the Liner 66.
here are some pics:

oh... this must be an very old reproduction... over 60 years old and the colour is surly a very old reprodution, too sorry...but this one is not a helmet from the market... it is out of family property. i know the helmet i was a little child... and i wan´t to show the helmet... not to get any wrong informations. the buckle...the belt... the bayonet.-..all fine originals. the decal i think, because i find 2 unused exampels in his army/SS passport is a dacal for selfmade firmstamp: "C.A. Pocher Nürnberg" Regards

All the action on this helmet has happened to the decal and liner whereas the rest remains untouched ? How did your Great Uncle manage to retain his helmet and bayonet considering he was in the SS ? Rob

Insisting something is authentic doesn't make it so. Here's a Quist decal to compare.

In addition to the evidence of the decal itself which is pretty solid, it would be most unusual for an SS soldier to have returned home with helmet and bayonet. All of these fellows were in POW cages and given "serious" interrogation and de-briefing before being released. Equipment was simply surrendered and disposed of. It may be that the helmet belonged to a member of the owner's family, but I'll bet that if so it was acquired after the war and the decal applied later. The alternative explanation, and one that I hesitate to mention, is that this was an attempt to "legitimize" this item in preparation for potential sale.
Of course I am merely speculating and if I am wrong, my apologies to the owner.

Notice the bottom leftborder. Instead of being curved, it's almost straight. The plane of the top of the runes isn't even. It's possible it's the camera angle, but it just doesn't look like an original decal. Compare it to the Quist decal I posted. Post the pics at Wehrmacht Awards, and get a 2nd opinion. They'll tell you right off the bat. You have to be a member to post pics, but you can post a comment, and someone there will help you post your pics.

I have my opinon on this SS decal but regarding SS solders bringing their gear back home i belive it hapends in many ocasions, perhaps he was wunded and send home to recover yust before the war ended or he simply stushed his gear when it was all over, not every SS man was POW.

Rogi, that is a possibility to be sure. I do believe that an effort was made to round up all soldiers of whatever branch even if they had returned home if for no other reason than to process their de-mobilization.

The whys and wherefores of whether items returned with soldiers is moot if the decal is not authentic. I have my doubts as to authenticity. If you take a hundred stories told, some may be true and some not. In the end, you still have a hundred stories with little way to prove any of them.
