When you look on the inside of German greatcoats there are 4 sewn rectangular things there. It was said that these were to be opened(cut) so the Leather belt could be passed through any pics of this being done? Also why would they do this?

Fnkgef. Schmidt, I checked my greatcoat and it does not have this feature. I could be wrong on this, but I believe this was done on West and East German greatcoats so that a small caliber pistol could be worn from an inner leather belt. This could be a feature on Third Reichs coats as well, but I have not noticed before. Anyone else?
Cheers, Marcus

What was the purpose of the leather re-enforced slits? was the leather belt put through these slits?

A greatcoat has a belted back correct? I think those slits are there so that belt could be retracted to the inside so as not to interfere with the wearing of a leather pistol belt. Just a thought. The leather, private purchase greatcoats worn by some officers have the same design feature although I have noticed in period photos that sometimes a pistol belt or Sam Browne is worn right over the belted back of the coat. Only my 2 cents.

Now that does make sense putting the cloth rear belt inside when wearing the leather belt with the greatcoat even for enlisted men

These Holes are for the Belthooks of the Fieldtunic. The soldiers have to wear the "Koppel" over the greatcoat and have to hang it in the belthooks.

More greatcoat questions: 1st: besides the shoulderstraps and the rank cheveron would the trade badge also be worn ir, "signal blitz" 2nd: where should the lower hem end? I have been told it should end mid calf and un-hemmed 3rd: What are the 4 hooks on the hem for and what or where do the hook to? Your inputs are greatly appreciated and thank you in advance
