Have you ever checked a PUMA catalogue to see if this is a listed model?

In my reproduction Puma catalouge it's listed as Nr 5 Leichter Offiziersäbel mit hoheitsabzeichen elegant zifeliert, ges gesch, äusserst beliebte Ausführung.

I hope I copied it correctly as the script was difficult to decipher.

Hello Jim;
No I have never checked it in a Puma catalog.
To be very honest I am not an expert at this stuff. My referance library is woefully deficient.
I am one of those collectors that started gathering this stuff up in the 50's when I was a youngster.
I went to the local movie show and seen Audie Murphy in to Hell and Back. I think it was 1954 0r 55 I really do not remember for sure. From that day to this I have had an interest in collecting militaria. My Dad fought the Japanese in the Pacific and 3 of my uncles fought the Nazi's in Europe while 1 of my Great Uncles,as an Army Captain, worked on the Manhattan Project as a metalurgist. He had studied Uranium as a heavy metal. Both My Grandfathers were WWI vets. They all had military stuff and I started gathering it up.
I got to be known as that crazy kid that wanted that kind of junk and it came to me. Most of what I have has come from vets, vet families, estate auctions and sales. A few pieces from Military shows and few from Ebay. Havn't been overly impressed with the stuff off the net.
Any way the reason I launched into that lengthy explanation was to say I havn't done a hellof a lot of research on this stuff. It seems like I was always busy trying to earn extra income to buy it from folks. Smile As the WWII guys thin out my sources for stuff are drying up so to speak now that I seem to have any extra income.
What the hell I think I am going to go to the Quapaw Casion and play some blackjack tonight and see what happens.
I like you boys you are a nice bunch of folks.
Steve

My thought is that these early type SS swords are VERY undervalued and much more rare! Very nice, thanks for the photos!

Here is a lind to photos of a page in the original Eickorn factory records in which the SA is ordering 52 sabers for thel Feldjaegerkorps. http://www.relicsofthereichs.com/daggers.htm(look at the bottom of the page)

similar records must exist for the SS sabers, which would probably tell a lot about how they were purchased and perhaps how they were marked. Joe S

Joe S this is a horrible site. BUT this certain find is a true historic one. Sad that it is not published. I think it would enlighten much dark chapters of our field of collecting.

My WKC catalog does not show a saber with runes. I would like someone to post a scan of that particular page. Joe S

Darren,

Can you show a WKC catalog plate that offers the SS runes on these swords? My catalogs do not offer that option. The model 1016 is shown as either a "Fein ciselierter Heeres-Offizier-Paterkopf-Säbel mit Hoheitsabzeichen" or a "Zollbeamten-Säbel" but no mention of the SS or runes. Engraved SS runes were offered on the Polizei-Degen models 1063 or 1064 as an option.

George, I've got a copy of it some where. I'll try and find it. In the mean time take a look at Tom's book exploring the dress daggers page 309, it shows both models and in fact i own 1013 for barry's collection.

If you also look at the price lists in the Eickhorn and WKC catalogs, you will note that the average price of a sword was about 12-15 DM (I thihk, or was it 20-25?) Whatever the exact amount was, it wasnt much. Triple etched blades could be had for only a FEW extra DM

Cheers

Darren

The WKC pricelist indicates a price for replating a hilt in gold or silver. I have interpreted that to mean that army sabers could be found with silver hilts. However,it recently occurred to me that nowhere have I been able to find any reference in original sales material to Army sabers being available in silver or gold, as an option, when other options are often stated. This lack of reference to silver hilted army sabers is circumstantial eveidence that silver was probably NOT authorized for army sabers and silver army style sabers are either SS swords, private purchase gifts or swords that have been plated postwar. I am not stating that to be my firm belief at this point but in view of the many different firms making army sabers and tremendous variety of stlyes available, one would think that if silver was an option it would be shown or mentioned somewhere. Joe S.

Joe S, I believe your are right but, I seem to remember reading a US Army reg that allowed silver uniform accoutrements. During the time I served I never saw silver only gold. Could the German Army have been the same?
