Please post the "one" most significant item you have in whatever you collect. It might not be historically important or have sentimental value or not the most expensive item you have, or maybe it is. But for your reasons alone it's the "one" item you cherish above all the rest. For some individuals this might be a hard decision to make for others quite easy. Thanks.

Aside from my kids, and the Gold Party Badge that I got from John Pepera, I think this would be my choice.....It's a custom-built working model of the Time Machine, from the 1960 George Pal film.
when the console lever is pushed, it lights up, and the rear dish spins, just like the one in the film. It took many years to get this, and it's a cherished possession, indeed...

Set the dial for 1945 Germany, go back and grab all the booty left over from the fall of the reich. Then head on back.

Set that thing back about 45 min earlier than what clinton thought and youll be able to blow away bin laden.

I will let the picture do the talking.It also came with a COA from Martin Bormann.The only reason he sold it was because he was trying to raise money for a bus ticket out of Berlin.

A model builder in New Jersey by the name of Ed Turner built it for me, some years ago....I'd wanted a model since I saw the film as a kid, but no one made a commercially available model from the film.
My model was made from a rough resin kit that was put out years ago. Ed effectively scratch-built this one, using the kit as a basis. The intricate details that he hand-made are remarkable. The upholstery nails are regular straight pins. He cut off the heads and drilled miniscule holes into which he glued the pinheads. The brass rails are all hand-made, and the electrical wiring is all concealed in the frame.

There is a company that makes a larger version of this model (my model is 9"x8"x5")

With the upgrade/light kit, it sells for a bit over 500.00, and requires an experienced model builder to assemble and paint.
My version cost me about 700.00, and considering the labor Ed put into it, I think it was a bargain. I'm thankful that it was in my office when my house burned down...

Thanks for the inside information however, being a bit pricy, I'm a bit reluctant to expend that kind of money unless it comes with a guarantee that I can go back to the point in time when "I Had Hair"!

Nice!....Do you just collect ephemera, or are you in fact, a magician?
I made my living for over 13 years doing close-up, before I went back to being a Film/TV Camera Operator.
I had a business card autographed by Houdini, but lost it in a house fire along with my entire TR collection. There was a bunch of original P&L magic that was lost, as well.
How did you manage to get 5 of these?....Are they all autographed? Might they have been from the Radner collection?

This used to be mine, but also have a nice Porsche Turbo that is a bit more reliable.

I collect cars and Bikes but I probably spend more per month on damn daggers!

This is what I cherish most. My collection is just material.

the "one" item that I cherish above all the rest? Without a doubt; this p38 that I got at Paris Island in 1977, and have had ever since! It has only let me down once!?!?

A mans gotta eat!..only let ya down once Blair?? as for my "item", it would be my wedding ring, or what it signifies. My wife, in ways, saved my life. After that...probably my T-bird.

Mann; funny you should mention your wedding band, because the ONE time my p38 failed me was when Mrs. Blair refused it in lou of a engagement ring!

I grew up eating C and K rations! {She may not have realized..you cant eat gold.}..they even came with a "smoke" for afterwards. ahh, the good 'ol days.

Make no mistake Mrs. Blair (28 years now) got her rings and from the PX at Quantico VA no less.

Since we are talking about most cherished items , I would say that ,besides my family members ,this tunic that my father gave me is my most cherished item of my militaria collection .
My Dad , Oblt. Heinz Ostermann ,served in the German Schutzpolizei from 9-1939 to the end of the war , and after that had to spent 5 years in nasty prison camps in Tito's Jugoslavia .He was present at Hitler's Birthday parade dressed in this tunic AND standing with drawn sword just several feet away from Hitler on the Koenigsplatz in Munich , 20th APRIL 1942!

Decorations were his , except the Anti-Partisan Badge came out too late in the war to reach Police Combat units in the field . His unit was the 8th Police Battalion Croatia ; all EM being Croatian or Volksdeutsche.

Hi Ruski, it's larger but not as sharp. I am trying to figure out how some of these guys post such large and sharply detailed photos and still keep them at 110kb and not over 110kb?
Do you have any ideas? I was born too late, I would have loved to have been one of the WWII veterans who were there.

Flyboy, the original pic was a BMP, which I saved as a jpeg and then resized it, making it less sharp. Can you re-take the pic as a jpeg and try again - it should be larger and clearer I think? I can get large, sharp pics in jpeg format well under the allowable limit.

Gaspare : If you are interested in the war service of my Dad , please read what I posted under the Police Forum under "(Oblt)Heinz Ostermann " .
Concerning the APB : my Dad with his unit had 25 close combat actions with Tito's Partisans in Croatia . The APB was given for those actions , but this late in the war none ever reached the 'front -line ' fighting units. The same is true for the Balkan shield ; both I added to his tunic .
I only once saw a true , rusted Balkan Shield , but it was not for sale . There is an account by a staff officer of the Prinz Eugen Div , that he had handed out 100 Balkan Shields to his unit members . This is in contrast to all the books that say that the Balkan Shield was never awarded !
Also , since my Dad , for the entire existence of his Battalion was the Adjutant to the commanding officer , forwarded the signed papers for his own promotion to Haupmann to police headquarters in Croatia and again it was too late in the war to ever come back to the unit . They also changed locations during their retreat constantly --so it might have gotten lost that way .
The most interesting decoration my Dad got , is the last one on his medal bar , the Croatian Bravery Medal in Bronze. I also got the original award document .
The Iron Cross was handed to him by General von Pannwitz , who was in charge of all the Russian cosack units that fought on the German side and in Croatia at that time and to the end .
We all know about the shameful handing over of these units , who had their wives and children with them , and of von Pannwitz ,by the British to the Russians . Only 10% ever made it back to their homelands in the Kaukasus ; and van Pannwitz was hanged in Moskau !

Your world class collection - is a continuation of the honor, Love & reverence, which you have for him & his memories. (Now, I can understand even better when you said that Chocolate from the GI's in post WW2 Germany was such a treat for the children!)
