What can you tell me about this sword?

The blade is 33 inches long to the end of the tang and 25.75 inches to the handle. Sorry forgot to take a photo of the whole blade but I hope there is enough here to help.

Here are pics of the engraving

other side. I think it is possible that there is more here but it has been worn away or damaged by the rust.

Nice shin-gunto sword.
The hand guard is called tsuba and you're right, it's cast brass.
For the kanji translation I'd suggest you to ask the guys on Nihonto Message Board - they are very friendly and helpful bunch.

THE PICTURES OF THE SIGNATURE ARE INCOMPLETE. I CAN TELL YOU FROM THE KANJI THAT ARE SHOWN THAT THE BLADE WAS MADE IN 1943. THE WORKER'S NAME IS MASAHIDE. THERE ARE NO RECORDS OF THESE MEN AS THEY WERE NOT TRADITIONAL SWORDSMITHS.
