I found this toy sword/ whistle that I picked up maybe 20 years ago. I can't even remember where I bought it. It appears to be modeled after a Kyu-gunto sword, probably made after WWII. There is a whistle in the grip. The whole thing is 11" long with a 6 1/2 steel blade. Has anyone seen another?

More pictures might help.

Hard to say, Brian.

At 11", I would guess more of a letter opener or even WWII salesman's sample than Kinder Sword. It is the first miniature Japanese sword I have ever seen, but not as much Japanese stuff is posted here in the west.

Maybe try a Japanese sword forum ?

Dave:
I tend to think it's more of a post war toy, especially with the whistle in the handle. With the blade being steel and pointed it might not be meant for kids though. Inquiring minds want to know.

Haven't seen another. Are there Japanese motifs on blackstrap of handle? Certainly not a salesman sample. I'd agree with it being a toy

There are long leaves and swirls on the backstrap. I'll try to get a good photo of it tomorrow. I've always thought it was a toy made before the war. All my post-war tin cars and other toys have JAPAN stamped in them. This has nothing. I guess kids back then weren't stupid enough to stab each other with it.

I found a slightly lager sword like this, same construction on ebay. It's up for sale right now at $175, no bids.
