Some great displays in this thread!
I don't have much Japanese stuff myself, but I've been meaning to share this one piece I picked up at a local antiques mall a few months ago.
It's a heavy hanging brass plaque, about the size of a salad plate, cast in the form of two three-toed dragons over a stylized chrysanthemum motif. According to some cursory research I've done, the three-toed dragon is the natural form of the Japanese dragon, and the chrysanthemum is a common motif in Japanese heraldry. Old, faded silk tassels are also attached to the back.
What makes this plaque 'militaria' is the fact that at some point someone etched the United States seal and star in the center. Whether this is a piece that predates WWII and was a vet pick-up/trench art, or if it was done after the war and marketed to occupying forces, is beyond my knowledge.
Anyone have thoughts on this?
Still one of my favorite pieces, and a bargain at about $35.
