This is typically a basic pattern brass hilt sabre with an anodized scabbard purchased by the Ordnance Department of the Army, hence the name "Ordnance Sword". They have stamped Waffenamt codes and property numbers. These swords could be drawn from stores for occasions which required a sword for wear and the individual did not own one. The sword would be returned to stores after the event. Usually seen produced by Carl Eickhorn and Alcoso, and date coded for the mid 1930s. I'm sure there were other makers and dates, just haven't seen them.

Welcome to the forum. Vern gave a good general perspective with these swords - in the German Army they were called an Einheitssabel for Offiziere and predominantly Unteroffiziere (senior grade NCO's) with Portepee. Officers getting an allowance for uniforms and private purchase swords, versus EM who were provided the items they needed at government expense (authorized EM could if they wanted to could also make private purchases). First manufactured during the Weimar era they were made intermittently until 1938/39 if my memory serves me correctly. The Germans calling the scabbard finish Brunierung (the same as for their rifles, pistols and service bayonets). Best Regards, Fred
