Ever since I bought J. Anthony Carter's book, I wanted the the # 8718 Saufanger in the 1912 August Stukenbrok advertisement on page 524. I later realized that all the Hirschfangers and Saufangers listed on the 1912 August Stukenbrok advertisement were made by Carl Eickhorn.

When I saw this "Antique Early 20th Century massive and heavy hunting Bowie knife" listed on eBay for $650.00 buy it now, I hesitated and called my friend, Mr. Kaeshammer of Germany. I thought maybe it had too much wear for the hefty price. Mr. Kaeshammer said: "This is a high-quality knife with signs of use that are normal, and I should buy it".

Some collectors on this site may call this example a "Beater" or a "Placeholder" because of the condition however, I have no regrets.

This Saufanger is listed as Nr. 791 in the Carl Eickhorn catalog. This Saufanger is listed in the 1912 August Stukenbrok catalog as "# 8718, Saufanger, extra kraftig, mit 30mm breiter und 24cm langer Klinge, Lederscheide, in Stahl brauniert".

Great find and not a beater at all. Love these types and they are very well made. I have one or two myself.

Thanks for the kind words, Mikee.

The seller, from Milton, Florida, e-mailed me that he traded a sword for the knife at a gun show. The seller was not aware that the knife was pictured in the August Stukenbrok advertisement on page 524 of J. Anthony Carter's book, "German Knife and Sword Makers, 1850-1945".

A much older one. I saved this one from a guy that was grinding the blade and scabbard. Got it very cheap so why not.

Thanks Mikee,

can you show the full blade on your Carl Eickhorn 791, please?

Here you go. As you know it's not easy taking a picture of a bright shiny blade.
