Hey guys, just a quick question. I have this Eickhorn Subordinate forestry cutlass that was handed down to me by my late Great Uncle. As you can see in the pic, it's down to the metal base, I'm guessing these all came gilted right? I have looked in the recesses, nicks, and crannies and I do not see any traces left of gilt? the maker mark is the 35-41 stamped squirrel. I asked my uncle about this when he was alive and he remembers that when he got it there was no gilting, that was 1945. The cutlass is not in very good condition, my uncle for whatever reason decided to "shellac" it then hot glued (shudders) it to a small display of other things he brought back. It remained there until he passed and I got it. Anyways, did they ALL come gilted originally?

Hi Patrick
Yes these types always came gilded.

yeah, that's what I thought. I wonder how all the gilt came off this thing then? I mean, there is no trace at all anywhere....weird.

Thanks Gary!

Hi Patrick
I have a senior model and it's down to the silver base, I just don't think that some of these held up to well.

Nice piece anyway

thanks Gary....I sure wish he didn't shellac it though...it really did a number on the blade. The etch is really clear but the whole blade is dark gray. Makes you almost want to cry a little....
